Area Forecast Discussion . CORRECTED National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 527 AM PDT Wed Aug 5 2020

SYNOPSIS. Cooler conditions will continue across the region through Wednesday, as a trough moves into the region. Light rain and drizzle will be possible this morning, mainly near the coast and even up into the coastal hills. In addition, breezy conditions will prevail, with locally gusty west to northwest winds expected during the afternoon and evening hours. Modest warming is then forecast for late in the week and into the weekend, but temperatures will only bounce back to near seasonal averages.

DISCUSSION. As of 3:15 AM PDT Wednesday . Water vapor image shows a mid-level trough moving into northern California this evening. This has deepened the marine layer to around 2000 feet while a strong onshore gradient has produced robust winds over parts of the North and East Bay Hills and the San Bruno Gap where SFO Airport had a gust to 41 kts at 10:38 pm. There is a good inland push of stratus from the MRY Bay Area into the central Bay Area which includes the Santa Cruz Mountains and the East Bay Hills. Measurable drizzle or even light rain has already been reported at a few RAWS sites in these areas. Drizzle/light rain expected to continue through midmorning along the coast and in the coastal hills. Could see up to one-tenth of an inch in the hills.

Inland highs today will be about 5-10 degrees cooler and a few degrees below normal for this time of year. Highs will range from the 60s along the coast to the mid 80s in the warmest inland locations. Onshore winds gusting to 30-40 kt can be expected along the coast and in the hills especially near Altamont.

The trough moves inland tonight but on the heels is another upper level trough approaching the Pacific Northwest. This trough will impact areas further north so there will be a warming trend for the area for Thursday and Friday. By Friday highs should be back up to the low to mid 90s in the warmest inland valleys. After this trough moves inland a weak remnant trough will develop off the California coast for the weekend. This will keep temperatures from really warming up as highs will remain near to slightly above normal. No heatwaves in sight as the long-range shows another upper trough approaching the Pacific Northwest early next week.

AVIATION. As of 4:56 AM PDT Wednesday . for 12z TAFs. IFR to MVFR ceilings are along the coast and moving inland with the stratus machine fully operational thanks to NW winds, coastal upwelling and sufficient water vapor for stratus cloud development. An uptrend in sea surface temps in late July has returned to cooler sea surface temps ranging from 50 F to 55 F, similar to early July. Expect partial clearing to the coast, stratus then returning tonight and Thursday morning. Patchy drizzle ongoing for the coast and west facing slopes in line of stratus surge farther inland. Marine layer depth near 2000 feet.

Vicinity of KSFO . IFR ceiling until 17z then MVFR ceiling for the day. Strong wind late last evening has since subsided to about 15 knots. West wind resuming to gusty again later today then easing again tonight and Thursday morning.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . MVFR ceilings with patchy light drizzle in the morning. Mainly MVFR ceilings through today, tonight and Thursday morning. Afternoon west winds up to 15 to 20 knots.

MARINE. as of 4:37 AM PDT Wednesday . Gusty northwest winds will prevail through late week. Strongest winds can be expected along the inner coastal waters north of Point Reyes and south of Point Sur. Winds over the North SF Bay will be breezy with a few stronger gusts Wednesday afternoon and into the early evening. These winds will generate steep fresh swells resulting in locally hazardous seas, especially for smaller vessels.
