Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 300 AM PDT Sun Sep 19 2021

SYNOPSIS. Decreasing showers this morning, mainly over the eastern foothills and mountains, as short wave trough moves through. Warmer and drier weather next week with some gusty north to east wind Sunday night through Tuesday morning and again Thursday.

DISCUSSION. Baroclinic zone undergoing frontolysis over interior NorCal attm as associated upper trough moves through the CWA. Convergent line of convection over Shasta county is eroding with some scattered light returns seen on radar over the eastern foothills and mountains. Wave pushes into the Great Basin later this morning as increasing subsidence enters the CWA from the west. As a result, shower chances should end by midday with decreasing clouds into the afternoon. High temperatures remain well below normal today with max temps in the upper 70s to lower 80s for the Central Valley and 50s to mid 70s for the mountains and foothills.

EPAC upper ridge builds inland tonight into Monday as surface high builds through Oregon into the Great Basin. This will result in increasing north to east wind tonight into Monday over interior NorCal. Strongest wind expected Monday along the west half of the Sacramento Valley and through favorably oriented gaps and canyons in the foothills and mountains. This could result in elevated to critical fire weather conditions where a fire weather watch is in effect. Wind speeds Monday approach advisory criteria for portions of interior NorCal.

Lighter wind expected Tuesday as upper ridging moves through. Drier short wave trough follows inland Wednesday with some locally breezy onshore wind, then rebuilding high pressure Thursday will bring an increase in north to east wind again. High temperatures forecast in the upper 80s to lower 90s for the Central Valley Monday, then low to mid 90s Tuesday into Wednesday.

PCH

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Thursday THROUGH Sunday). Another round of breezy north winds will be possible Thursday behind the mid-week short-wave. Otherwise, high pressure brings a return of hot weather as highs climb into the 90s across the Central Valley, around 10 degrees above average.

AVIATION. Scattered showers continue this morning accompanied by areas of MVFR and local IFR conditions. Improving conditions expected this afternoon. Local south to west surface wind gusts 15-30 kts, decreasing most areas by 18Z.
