Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 336 PM PST Tue Jan 28 2020

SYNOPSIS. Dry conditions are expected the rest of this week for most areas with mild temperatures, reaching well above average late in the week. Precipitation chances may return late this weekend, mainly over the mountains.

DISCUSSION. A weak cold front moving across the area today has brought some light rain showers to the Valley, Delta and foothills. Rainfall amounts over the past 24 hours have ranged from 0.25 to 0.80 inches over the northern Coastal Range and Shasta County, down to a few hundredths of an inch in the Sacramento area. Some light snow showers/flurries were reported above 6000 feet along the I-80 and Highway 50 corridor in the Sierra.

Temperatures will remain fairly mild overnight, ranging from the upper 20s and 30s in the mountains to the mid 40s across the Central Valley. Some fog could develop by morning as some clearing occurs, with the best potential in the northern San Joaquin Valley.

A ridge of high pressure builds in beginning mid-week resulting in dry and mild conditions. Temperatures are forecast to gradually warm for the second half of this week, reaching 10-15 degrees above average by Friday. Northerly surface flow may be strong enough to inhibit fog potential on the west side of the Valley and north of I-80. EK

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Saturday THROUGH Tuesday).

Strong upper ridging progged over NorCal this weekend resulting in dry weather with above normal temperatures. High temperatures in the Central Valley projected to be upwards of 10 to 15 degrees above normal. Night and morning valley fog will continue to be possible Saturday. Upper ridging progresses and flattens Sunday as upstream short wave trough moves through Interior NorCal. This Pacific storm looks weak with some light precipitation possible over the mountains and mainly northern portions of the Sacramento Valley. High amplitude ridging follows inland Monday into Tuesday for drier weather and breezy northerly wind.

AVIATION.

VFR conditions with light winds expected through 12Z. Patchy fog could develop after 12z over the nrn San Joaquin Valley.

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
