Synopsis for the central california coast and bays including the Monterey bay..Greater farallones...and cordell bank national marine sanctuaries... Moderate to breezy northwest winds will continue across the waters through late this week. Winds will ease slightly over the southern outer waters and parts of the coastline tomorrow with gusty conditions persisting elsewhere. Breezy winds are expected into early this evening over the san francisco bay around the golden gate gap and northward through the delta. These winds will generate steep fresh swells resulting in locally hazardous seas, especially for smaller vessels. A couple of light southerly swells will continue into the weekend.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 225 PM PDT Wed Aug 5 2020

SYNOPSIS. Below normal temperatures are expected through today with a pronounced warming trend beginning on Thursday. Above normal temperatures return to the region over by the weekend with a slight chance of mountain showers and thunderstorms.

DISCUSSION. Mostly clear skies observed across central and northern California this afternoon with pleasantly cool conditions for August standards. Compared to 24 hours ago, temperatures are generally running 5 to 10 degrees cooler throughout the Sacramento Valley and northern San Joaquin Valley. These below normal temperatures can be attributed to the deep marine layer, strong onshore flow (presently at 3.2 mb between San Francisco and Sacramento), and the upper level trough whose axis is aligned over the Golden State. By the time the afternoon wraps up, some communities in/around the Delta may struggle to hit 80 degrees! Overall, high temperatures today will equate to about 5 to 15 degrees below early August climatological normals. As for shower/thunderstorm potential -- generally limited to far northwest Shasta County and points north and west.

The break from the summertime heat will be short-lived as temperatures begin to rebound on Thursday. The warming trend will continue into the weekend when temperatures will flip back to above normal values. Expect triple digit heat to return to the northern Sacramento Valley as early as Friday, then becoming widespread around Redding for the weekend. Temperatures in the southern Sacramento Valley and northern San Joaquin Valleys will be in the middle to upper 90s on Saturday. These values generally correspond to low to moderate heat risks from south to north.

Another thing to keep an eye on for Friday and the weekend will be the chance of some isolated shower and thunderstorm development in the Sierra Nevada. The Storm Prediction Center has much of the central and northern Sierra under a general thunder risk for Friday. // Rowe

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Sunday THROUGH Wednesday).

Ensembles continue to depict broad troughing breaking down into early next week, which means slightly above normal temperatures. Models disagree on trough deepening again around mid-week with GFS deeper than Euro. GFS is also more aggressive in developing thunderstorms over the Sierra crest and Southern Cascades. Have introduced slight chance of thunder for Sunday and Monday afternoon/evenings, though confidence is low at this time.

AVIATION.

General VFR conditions next 24 hours, except for local SCT- BKN marine stratus with cigs around 1200 ft possible 12z thru 17Z. Local southwesterly surface wind gusts 20-35 kts vicinity Carquinez Strait/West Delta, and local gusts up to 20 knots elsewhere tonight between 00-06Z. EK

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
