Synopsis for the central california coast and bays including the Monterey bay..Greater farallones...and cordell bank national marine sanctuaries... Southwesterly winds will prevail through tonight as a storm system moves across the coastal waters. This storm will bring wet weather to the region through early next week. High pressure will return by the middle of next week bringing a return of drier weather. A prevailing moderate northwesterly swell will persist through much of the forecast period.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 224 PM PDT Sat Apr 4 2020

Synopsis. The first of a pair storm systems is moving through NorCal today. Rain, gusty winds, chances for thunderstorms, heavy mountain snow, and travel issues are forecast into early next week. Below average temperatures likely through Tuesday with a gradual warm up thereafter.

Discussion. The first of two systems is moving through the region today and this evening. The second and stronger storm will move into the region late tonight and Sunday. Snow levels have been near 3000 feet over parts of western Shasta county to near 4500 feet over the west slopes of the Sierra Nevada. Showers are expected to continue in between the two systems especially over higher terrain. Up to seven inches of new snowfall is expected through midnight from around I-80 southward with up to around a foot of snow to the north.

NAM 3 km model is indicating possible thunderstorms late tonight into early Sunday morning mainly south of Marysville and into the adjacent foothills. Heavy snowfall is expected over the western slopes during the day on Sunday which will make travel difficult. The atmosphere looks to be destabilizing anywhere from around 11 am to noon. Profiles indicate potential for heavy rain with small hail. Street flooding will also be of concern as a strong line is indicated to develop early in the afternoon and move across the valley then into the foothills by mid to late afternoon. Models have the line basically forming from around Red Bluff southward and into the East Bay early in the afternoon then moving eastward. There is a hint of a convergence zone setting up near Redding late in the afternoon and early evening that may generate some thunderstorms. During the morning through mid afternoon as these storms move through winds should be increasing becoming breezy to locally windy at times before tapering in the late afternoon.

The low will be slowly moving southward along the coast Sunday night and Monday. By Monday the heavier precipitation should be behind us with showers continuing on Monday. Some instability continues over the southern areas of the forecast area . mainly south of Marysville and including the adjacent foothills so have mention of slight chance of afternoon through early evening thunderstorms.

On Tuesday the low moves off the coast of Southern California. Some moisture warping back around may produce some showers but for the most part expect dry conditions and warmer temperatures.

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Wednesday THROUGH Saturday).

A deep closed low just off the coast of Southern California mid-week brings minimal impacts in NorCal except for the chance for some light showers in the mountains south of Highway 50 through Thursday. Drier weather is expected into next weekend as EPac high pressure noses into NorCal. Mostly clear skies, fairly light winds, and above normal temperatures will be seen through Saturday.

AVIATION.

Widespread MVFR with local IFR possible as a weather system moves across NorCal today into tomorrow. Gusty south winds develop briefly this afternoon, with another round of gusty winds up to 30 knots after 12Z tomorrow. Snow levels 045-055.
