Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 229 PM PDT Mon Apr 19 2021

SYNOPSIS. Dry and unseasonably warm again today. Cooler Tuesday with the chance of mainly mountain showers and thunderstorms. A few showers possible Wednesday in the Sierra south of Tahoe. Otherwise dry and warmer weather returns through the end of the week. Chance of precipitation returns this weekend.

DISCUSSION. High pressure is beginning to break down today over Northern California due to a trough moving through the central US. However, pressure will remain high enough for another day of well above normal daytime temperatures for most of the CWA. Early afternoon temperatures are a few degrees cooler to this time yesterday for most Valley locations due to a modest onshore flow. The winner though is Travis Air Force Base at 18 degrees cooler then yesterday with an observation of only 69 degrees. Overall, Valley temperatures are still forecast to peak in the mid to upper 80s which is still 10 to 20 degrees above the daily normal.

Ensemble guidance continues to bring a trough through the area tomorrow, slowly moving to our southeast through Wednesday. This will bring cooler temperatures (upper 70s to low 80s in the Valley) as well as a chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms tomorrow, mainly to the mountains and foothills including the Sierra Nevada, southern Cascades, and Coastal Range. However, latest guidance continues to show the trough oriented a bit more to the west than previous runs. This combined with sufficient forecast CAPE values of 200-800 J/kg and PWATS > 0.5 inch could produce a few isolated showers or thunderstorms moving off of the mountains and into the Sacramento Valley. The main threats with any thunderstorm are small hail, brief heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and lightning. Although, HREF is indicating the potential for above 0.5 inch of rain in one hour over the Sierra foothills with stronger cells, signal remains that amounts should remain below 1 inch per hour, so no debris flow impacts are expected to burn scars.

Shower and thunderstorm chances continue for Wednesday, mainly for mountain areas along and south of I-80. Ensembles still uncertain about exact location of the trough to our southeast on Wednesday, so confidence in thunderstorms is lower.

Gusty north winds will also accompany the trough tomorrow and Wednesday for the northern Sacramento Valley. Strongest gusts are expected tomorrow with gusts up to 25 to 35 mph. Locally breezy downslope winds pick up overnight tomorrow night in the Sierra before gusty winds return to the northern Sacramento Valley again Wednesday. Conditions remain extremely dry in this region of the Valley with minimum daytime RH values forecast in the single digits and teens. This combined with gusty winds could create locally elevated fire weather concerns through Wednesday. It is recommended to avoid outdoor activities that could create sparks.

Ridging returns behind the trough passage bringing dry weather and warmer temperatures. Valley highs are forecast for the mid to upper 80s Wednesday and Thursday. -HEC

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Friday THROUGH Monday). Long range forecast has little change. Upper level ridging returns for Thursday and Friday which will bring the return of warm and dry weather to the region. A pattern change still looks likely for the weekend and into early next week, as ensemble guidance alludes to a trough moving towards the region. The deterministic models are still in agreement, though there is still quite a bit of uncertainty this far out. Will continue to advertise cooler and more seasonal weather and some POP over interior NorCal.

AVIATION. VFR conditions next 24 hours, except for local MVFR conditions possible vicinity showers and isolated thunderstorms mainly over the mountains after 12Z- 18Z Tuesday. Local northerly wind gusts 20-30 kts develop over the northern Sacramento Valley by 16Z-18Z Tuesday. Local southwest wind gusts to 25 kts vicinity Delta tonight.

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
