Synopsis for the central california coast and bays including the Monterey bay..Greater farallones...and cordell bank national marine sanctuaries... The atmospheric river jogged northward today and is currently focused over the southern waters including the big sur coast and Monterey bay. Local gale to storm force southerly winds and very steep fresh southerly seas are possible south of the atmospheric river. North of the front, winds have weakened significantly but remain breezy and out of the south. Winds north of the front will become breezy to gusty (up to 35kt) during the afternoon and into the evening. Isolated to scattered showers and Thunderstorms north of the front are expected today and may bring brief heavy rainfall, hail, erratic gusty winds, or generate waterspouts. Otherwise, a steep northwest swell will move through the waters today alongside the fresh wind driven seas.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 315 AM PST Wed Jan 27 2021
SYNOPSIS. A long duration, high impact winter storm will impact the region through Friday. Periods of gusty winds, moderate to heavy rain and blizzard conditions over the Northern Sierra. Potential for significant low elevation snow and damaging winds today as well as burn scar impacts to the LNU Complex and SCU Complex burn scars.
DISCUSSION. Strong system going through the region continues to generate strong winds downed trees and power outages. Winds should be decreasing to lower levels between 6 and 8 am this morning but remain breezy during the day. So far the greatest measured wind gusts for the valley occurred at McClellan at 2:35 AM at 67 mph then Marysville at 1:10 AM in the morning measuring 66 mph. The peak at Alpine meadows has had 125 mph wind gust at 1:45 AM.
Low snow levels continue with snow showers over the north end of the valley. Further south in the Motherlode snow levels are near 2000 feet with major roads looking ok at that level this morning looking at the webcams. Generally around I-80 northward activity has changed over to showers while to the south we are still getting some moderate to heavy rainfall. Snow levels should rise enough later this morning to change the snow showers over to rain showers for the northern end of the valley. Over the foothills snow levels will rise above 3000 feet by noon.
As the low deepens off the coast the heavier rain will continue to push southward this morning but by late morning the front stalls and starts to move a little north. This may cause problems tonight over the SCU Complex Burn Scar as it stall out over the complex. Over the western slopes/foothills after areas generally around the US-50 north lighten up in intensity this afternoon rain/snow will spread northward increasing in intensity for rain/snowfall. The heavier area of rain/snow will continue to spread northward over foothills and mountains and eventually reach southwestern Shasta County late tonight. By Thursday night most areas will see a decrease in rain/showers with the West slopes of the Sierra Nevada decreasing in intensity last on Friday morning.
EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Sunday THROUGH Wednesday).
We will remain in an unsettled weather pattern into the extended period. A deep trough will be dropping out of the Gulf of Alaska on Sunday and will push over NorCal on Tuesday. This will bring showers starting during the day Sunday with the best chances on Monday as the cold front moves through the region. This system does not look as wet as our current system but it will be a wetter system with several inches of snow expected over the mountains and upwards of an inch or more of rain in the Valley and Foothills. Snow levels look to be around 5000 feet with this system. Showers will linger into Tuesday with dry weather returning Wednesday as upper level ridging builds in. High temperatures will be near to just below average throughout the period.
-CJM
AVIATION.

For northern terminals snow will transition to rain after 15z. Strong southerly winds gusting to 55 knots through 14z with gusts to 35 knots after that. LIFR conditions over the mountains due to snow.
