Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC 238 PM EST Sun Mar 7 2021

SYNOPSIS. A strong area of Canadian high pressure will continue to expand across the area through Monday before drifting offshore during the middle of the week. A cold front is expected to slowly approach from the north toward the end of the week.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/. Northwest flow continues today, with below average temperatures continuing for this afternoon. High pressure is located just to our northwest, and will move directly overhead tonight. This has left very little in the way of cloud cover across the region.

The stubborn upper trough that has influenced our weather over the past several days will finally press offshore tonight. High pressure at the surface will follow within the zone of subsidence behind it. Temperatures will be quite cold tonight, with lows into the teens for most, except for the densely populated metro areas, which stay in the mid 20s. The more rural zones and sheltered valleys will get quite cold tonight as winds subside and clear skies prevail. One of the cooler nights this winter (even though it is almost spring . ).

SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/. Dry weather will continue for Monday and Tuesday, but with a very noticeable warming trend across the region. High pressure will slide by overhead during the day Monday, then offshore Monday night into Tuesday. Highs on Monday will be closer to seasonal averages, with low to mid 50s expected. For Tuesday, with high pressure offshore and southerly flow taking hold at the surface, highs soar into the mid to upper 60s. There may be a few more passing clouds on Tuesday as a very weak disturbance approaches from the west, but overall more sunshine than clouds is still expected.

LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. High pressure is forecast to have moved well offshore by Wednesday as a strong upper-level ridge builds across the eastern United States. Southwesterly return flow is expected to push temperatures to 15 to 20 degrees above normal during the second half of the week, possibly approaching 70 degrees during the afternoon hours at times.

A few clouds are possible as a weak upper-level disturbance in the jet stream crosses Thursday, but otherwise dry and mainly clear conditions are forecast until a cold front approaches toward the end of the week. Some showers may accompany this front, but there is uncertainty in how much forcing and moisture will be available given downsloping low-level flow having a drying effect off the mountains.

There is uncertainty in the front's position by the upcoming weekend, with some solutions pushing the front far enough south to keep us dry and cooler, with other solutions hanging the front up overhead with lingering precipitation chances.

AVIATION /19Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/. Some brief 20 knot wind gusts possible this afternoon across our northern terminals (so excluding CHO). Other than that, VFR condtions will continue through Friday. Light winds expected tonight through Tuesday. Wind directions out of the northwest today will become more light and variable Monday, then turning out of the southwest on Tuesday.

For Wed-Fri, S/SW flow 10-15G20-25kt during the day, generally near or below 10 kt with fewer gusts at night.

MARINE. Brief gusty winds this afternoon have lead to a Small Craft Advisory for portions of the tidal Potomac. Elsewhere on the waters, don't be surprised to see some gusts close to 18 knots, but should generally fall just shy of SCA criteria.

Beyond that, winds will taper off this evening through Tuesday, with no additional marine hazards anticipated at this time.

Small Craft Advisory conditions are possible in southwesterly flow during the second half of the week, but warmer air moving over cooler water may result in poor mixing.

FIRE WEATHER. A dry airmass will remain in place through the middle of the week. Relative humidity values could reach the 20s and 30s over portions of the area each day through Wednesday, but winds will generally be less than 15 mph. Winds may be a little stronger Thursday, though humidity will also be increasing.
