Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 727 PM EDT Mon Sep 28 2020

SYNOPSIS. A cold front will move into western Pennsylvania tonight. A few areas of low pressure riding north along the front, will slow down the progress of the front as it moves through our region Tuesday through Wednesday. Another cold front will arrive Thursday night into Friday. In it's wake, cooler air will settle in over the region into next weekend.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM TUESDAY MORNING/. Forecast mainly on track, so no significant changes will be made to the database. Southwest flow continues this evening and overnight, and moisture will increase across the area, allowing clouds to once again spread across the area. Most of the night will be dry, but as a couple of short wave/vorticity impulses move into the area toward daybreak, scattered showers could begin to develop across the area. There may also be some patchy fog later tonight where winds become light due to the high humidity.

Another warm and muggy night is expected as lows are expected to be mostly in the 60s, as well as dewpoints.

SHORT TERM /6 AM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/. A cold front will approach the area from the west during the day Tuesday, before slowing down later in the day and into into Tuesday evening as a wave of low pressure forms on the front. This wave of low pressure will move across the area during the evening and overnight, eventually pulling the cold front across the area.

During the daytime Tuesday, it is not expected to rain the entire day everywhere. The showers will likely be more scattered in nature ahead of the cold front for much of the daytime hours. There is also expected to be some instability during the day, up to 500 J/kg, so a few thunderstorms will also be possible. While severe weather is not currently expected, any stronger storms could contain gusty winds and a brief period of heavy rain.

The bigger concern comes during the evening and into the overnight period when the front and wave of low pressure move across the area. Instability dissipates by the evening hours, so strong to severe thunderstorms are not expected. However, PW values increase to 1.75-2.25 inches during the overnight as the heaviest rain is expected to develop and spread across the area. Models are in pretty good agreement that a widespread 1-2 inches storm total is expected, with locally higher amounts near 3 inches. It looks like the higher amounts may focus across eastern New Jersey and southern Delmarva. Flash Flood Guidance remains pretty high given how dry it has been recently with the lowest numbers 2-3 inches in an hour. So while there could be some localized flooding, as long as it doesn't all come down in one hour, it should be more nuisance/poor drainage type flooding.

LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/. A cold front will move offshore Wednesday morning bringing an end to the heavy rain. In the wake of the main cold front, cooler air settles in over the region Wednesday and Thursday. A secondary cold front is expected Thursday night into Friday morning. However, dry air advection beginning in the wake of the earlier front should limit rain chances with this front.

A trailing mid level short wave trough could lead to some rain Sunday and Monday, but as with the Thursday and Friday period, moisture could be a limiting factor. Even if we do get rain, it should be isolated at most.

AVIATION /00Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight . VFR conditions begin the evening period, but MVFR conditions will return late in the night, then IFR by daybreak Tuesday. Showers may also develop late in the night and toward daybreak. South to southeast winds around 5 to 10 knots. Moderate confidence but low confidence on the exact timing of flight category changes.

Tuesday . IFR conditions will continue through the day Tuesday, with a chance of brief improvement to MVFR by the afternoon for some areas. There is a chance of showers through the day, with possible thunderstorms during the afternoon. South-southwest winds 5-10 knots.

Tuesday night . IFR conditions are expected across the area with a period of heavy rain possible for some area. South- southwest winds, shifting to west overnight 5-10 knots. High confidence on lower conditions, lower on timing and placement of heavy rain.

Outlook .

Wednesday . Conditions improve to MVFR then VFR through the day Wednesday. Winds shift to the northwest behind a cold front 5-10 knots, with gusts 5-20 knots by the afternoon. Moderate confidence.

Thursday . VFR conditions expected with southwesterly winds around 10 kts and gusts up to 20 kts. Moderate confidence.

Friday and Saturday . Mainly VFR. West winds 5 to 10 kts. Moderate confidence.

MARINE. Tonight . Conditions will remain below advisory levels for the rest of today into tonight.

Tuesday-Tuesday night . Conditions will begin the day Tuesday below advisory levels, however, seas are expected to build to near 5 feet by the late afternoon and early evening. Winds will increase during the evening and overnight Tuesday. Therefore, a Small Craft Advisory has been issue for late afternoon Tuesday, through the day Wednesday on the ocean, and Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning on Delaware Bay.

Outlook .

Wednesday . Decreasing winds and seas will fall below SCA criteria by afternoon.

Thursday through Saturday . Winds and seas below SCA criteria.

Rip Currents .

There is a moderate risk for the formation of dangerous rip currents on Tuesday for the New Jersey coast due to increasing southerly winds and wave heights. For the Delaware coast, there is a low risk for the development for dangerous rip currents on Tuesday.

There is a low risk for the development of dangerous rip currents on Wednesday for both New Jersey and Delaware beaches.

PHI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. PA . None. NJ . None. DE . None. MD . None. MARINE . Small Craft Advisory from 5 PM Tuesday to 6 PM EDT Wednesday for ANZ450>455. Small Craft Advisory from 11 PM Tuesday to 8 AM EDT Thursday for ANZ430-431.
