Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 316 PM EST Wed Mar 3 2021
SYNOPSIS. Several cold fronts will move across the region tonight and Thursday. Arctic high pressure then builds in from the north and west Friday and Saturday before moving offshore Sunday and Monday. Bermuda high pressure sets up by the middle of next week.
NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/. A couple of weak fronts will cross the region with the first to move through this evening and the second one on Thursday. Both of these fronts are dry so not much will come of their passage other than a wind shift and the arrival of some cooler air.
Westerly winds through this afternoon will become northwest this evening and then more to north-northwest on Thursday. Wind speeds around 5 to 10 mph through tonight will gradually pick up speed toward daybreak and Thursday will be another gusty day across the region. Winds will be around 10 to 20 mph with gusts around 25 to 35 mph.
With the northwest flow tonight, we will see some cooler air filter down into the region. Overnight lows will remain fairly mild and drop into the 30s across much of the region with some mid/upper 20s across portions of northern New Jersey and the southern Poconos.
Thursday will be another mostly sunny day. The second cold front pushes down through the region during the day bringing a reinforcing push of cold air. With dry conditions in place, do not expect any chance of precipitation to occur. The main issue will be the winds as previously mentioned. Highs will feel much colder mainly due to the winds but just how cold we get will be highly dependent on the speed at which the secondary front crosses the region. The southern Poconos and northwest New Jersey will be at least 10 degrees colder than today with highs only reaching into the low to mid 30s. We may still see highs reach the lower 40s to near 50 through the rest of the area though expect it to feel more like the 30s to near 40 due to the winds.
SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/. The Northeast down into the Mid-Atlantic region will be caught between departing low pressure over eastern Canada and Arctic high pressure from central Canada building down into the Northern Plains and upper Great Lakes. Strong CAA will be underway starting Thursday night, continuing through Saturday with 925-850 mb temps dropping to as low as -8C to -11C.
From Thursday night into Friday afternoon, 35-40 kt LLJ will pass through the region. With a tight NW pressure gradient over the area, northwest winds will increase to 15-20 mph with 25-30 mph gusts during the day Friday. In addition, with a strong downsloping flow, full sunshine, and strong mixing, surface dew points will dry out quite efficiently over the area. For surface dew points Friday afternoon, mixed down NAM dew points from a mixing height of around 4000 feet and blended with the NBM 10 percent dew points, This resulted in afternoon dew points in the low single digits to around 0F. Combined with the strong northwest flow, there are fire weather concerns for Friday, as min RH values Friday afternoon will range from 20-25 percent pretty much throughout. The exception will be northern New Jersey and the southern Poconos, where abundant snowpack remains, resulting in higher min RH values. Afternoon highs on Friday will generally top off in the mid to upper 30s throughout, except for the southern Poconos, where highs will be in the 20s to low 30s. Keep in mind, the normal high for Philadelphia this time of the year is in the upper 40s, and highs on Friday and Saturday will be closer to the seasonal averages of mid January!
Winds diminish Friday night as the pressure gradient relaxes over the area as the center of the high settles over the Midwest and western Great Lakes. Highs remain in the 30s to around 40 on Saturday, but with slightly lesser winds, surface dew points should be some 10 degrees higher than Friday. Min RH values will generally range from 35-40 percent, and surface winds will gust to around 20 mph. Wind chills during this time will range from the single digits to mid teens, though could be as low as -10F in the southern Poconos Thursday night and Friday night.
LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/. A prolonged period of dry weather remains in tact over the area. High pressure moves into the Mid-Atlantic Sunday and Sunday night before moving offshore on Monday. Another cold day on tap for Sunday with highs similar to those of Friday and Saturday, but with return flow setting up on Monday as the high moves offshore, highs return closer to normal on Monday.
High pressure becomes entrenched off the Southeast and Mid- Atlantic coasts on Tuesday, and with zonal flow setting up aloft, strong WAA will be underway. Highs starting on Tuesday should be some 10-12 degrees above normal, topping off in the upper 50s to around 60, though slightly cooler along the coasts and in the mountains.
Even warmer weather is possible for Wednesday!
AVIATION /19Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/. The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Through this evening . VFR. Mostly clear skies. Southwest to west winds 5 to 10 knots with a few gusts around 20 knots. High confidence.
Tonight . VFR. Mostly clear with some high clouds around. Northwest to north winds around 5 knots or less. High confidence.
Thursday . VFR. Scattered mid to high clouds. Northwest winds increasing in the morning to 15 to 20 knots with gusts around 25 to 30 knots. High confidence.
Outlook .
Thursday night through Friday night . VFR. W-NW winds 15-20 kt with 20-30 kt gusts, diminishing to 10-15 kt Friday night. High confidence.
Saturday through Sunday . VFR. NW winds 10-15 kt with gusts to 20 kt, diminishing to 5-10 kt on Sunday. High confidence.
Monday . VFR. W-SW winds 5-10 kt. High confidence.
MARINE. Quiet conditions will continue on the area waters through tonight.
Winds pick up in the northwest flow on Thursday and we will start to mix efficiently. Winds on the northern and central New Jersey waters will likely start to see 25 knot gusts Thursday morning. Southern New Jersey and the Delaware waters will see gusts develop late morning and the winds on the Delaware Bay will pick up towards the afternoon. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for Thursday for all waters.
Outlook .
Thursday night and Friday . A tight pressure gradient over the area results in NW winds 15-20 kt with 25-30 kt gusts. SCA will be needed, though there may be some gales late Thursday night and Friday. There is a chance for freezing spray late Thursday night/early Friday morning.
Saturday . Sub-SCA conditions expected, though winds will gust to 20 kt.
Sunday through Monday . Sub-SCA conditions expected.
FIRE WEATHER. A prolonged period of dry weather will develop across the region, lasting into the middle of next week. Strong northwest winds will develop Thursday night and Friday.
As an Arctic airmass settles over the area min RH values on Friday will generally range from 20 to 25 percent across southeast Pennsylvania, much of New Jersey, the eastern shores of Maryland, and Delaware. Afternoon wind gusts will be as high as 25 to 30 mph.
Conditions will somewhat abate on Saturday, with min RH values generally 30 to 35 percent and afternoon wind gusts as high as 20 mph.
There will be continued coordination with fire-weather partners through the week to determine if fuels will be sufficiently dry to support the need for special weather statements and/or fire weather products on Friday. Though winds will be lighter this weekend, dew points will remain unusually low, so conditions may be close to fire- weather thresholds several days in a row.
PHI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. PA . None. NJ . None. DE . None. MD . None. MARINE . Small Craft Advisory from 7 AM Thursday to 6 AM EST Friday for ANZ450>452.
