SYNOPSIS. High pressure gives way to a frontal system that moves through the area tonight. High pressure then returns to end the week. Low pressure and its associated frontal system impacts the area Saturday, with another frontal system moving through Sunday into Monday. High pressure returns Tuesday.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/. Made some minor adjustments to temperatures and dewpoints to better match observed trends. Expecting some vertical mixing today adiabatically to around 900mb. Low level warm air advection is expected with forecast soundings showing veering of low level winds between the surface and 800mb. Adjusted max temperatures slightly higher from previous forecast.

Mostly sunny skies courtesy of a weak high pressure to the south of the area eventually become mixed with clouds as high pressure moves eastward offshore. Cirrus clouds already moving through the region late this morning and expect a gradual increase and slow thickening of clouds through the day. A shortwave trough approaches the area this afternoon with a weak surface low pressure and cold front poised to move through the area. Ahead of this low pressure system, increasing southerly flow this afternoon allows temperatures to warm up fairly significantly with high temperatures in mainly the low 50s to some mid 50s within the NYC Metro Area. This will be about 10 degrees above average. Wind gusts of 15-25 mph are forecast this afternoon with the strongest gusts toward the coast.

SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/. The weak surface low and cold front approach the area this evening bringing the possibility of some rain showers as early as 6 PM for the northwestern areas. Scattered light showers may move through the area as the cold front moves through overnight but only have slight chance PoPs through midnight. Afterwards, conditions dry out and skies clear as high pressure builds in from the west. Winds likely remain fairly gusty ahead of and behind the cold frontal passage as the pressure gradient tightens with the building high pressure from the west. Low temperatures will generally be in the low to middle 30s.

High pressure builds in on Thursday with diminishing winds through the day and clearing skies. High temperatures will be in the low 40s, about average for this time of year.

LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. An active pattern remains through the extended period as the northern stream dominates and sends a series of open shortwaves across the northern tier of the country and into the northeast into early next week. With changes in timing of the shortwaves from model run to run, there is also uncertainty on timing and placement of the wave among the guidance. The system Saturday remains on track, and then uncertainties increase Sunday through Tuesday. Sunday some guidance keeps a southern low suppressed while a northern stream system comes through weak. And other guidance brings the Sunday southern low farther to the north, and phases with the northern stream. Much of the time the area will be rather warm with mostly rain occurring across the region. Colder air will return to the northeast behind a low Monday as gusty northwest flow develops.

AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/. A cold front passes overnight.

VFR through the TAF period, although a few sprinkles are possible with the fropa.

Winds will gradually back to the SSW-S into the afternoon. Gusts 18-25kt likely for most terminals late this afternoon and early evening. The gusts likely end after 00z before picking up again overnight behind the frontal passage and a wind shift to the NW 5-9z. NW winds in the 15-25kt range on Thu.

. NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty .

Timing of wind gusts this afternoon/evening may be off by 1-2 hours. A few gusts 25-30 kt possible for KJFK/KLGA late afternoon/early evening.

OUTLOOK FOR 18Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY. Thursday. VFR. NW winds gust 20-25kt. Friday. VFR. Saturday. MVFR or lower with rain. A wintry mix possible at the onset. Sunday. Chance of rain and MVFR. Monday. Strong NW winds possible behind a cold front.

Detailed information, including hourly TAF wind component forecasts, can be found at: http:/www.weather.gov/zny/n90

MARINE. Sub-SCA conditions on non-ocean waters and on the ocean from Sandy Hook to Fire Island Inlet this morning under high pressure becomes closer to SCA conditions by afternoon as winds increase from the south. SCA conditions on all waters begins this afternoon with wind gusts near or greater than 25 kt. On the ocean waters, some gusts closer to 35 kt will be possible tonight, but due to the occasional nature of the stronger gusts upgrades to a Gale Warning were not issued.

Small craft conditions will be ongoing across the forecast waters Thursday morning with conditions improving west to east into Thursday afternoon and evening as high pressure builds over the waters. Sub SCA conditions are then expected across all the waters through early Saturday. With an increasing southwesterly flow ahead of a low, marginal SCA conditions will be possible on the ocean waters Saturday, and by late Saturday night into Sunday ocean seas build to small craft levels. Sunday night the flow weakens and ocean seas slowly subside to below SCA levels. There remains uncertainty with the timing of frontal systems impacting the waters Friday through Sunday which will have an impact on whether or not SCA conditions exist.

HYDROLOGY. No hydrologic impacts are anticipated through Tuesday.
