Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Duluth MN 1054 PM CST Fri Nov 27 2020

DISCUSSION. (This evening through Thursday) Issued at 322 PM CST Fri Nov 27 2020

A weak low pressure system will bring a chance of snow to northern Minnesota Saturday night and Sunday morning, followed by lake effect snow in northwest Wisconsin Sunday afternoon through Monday. Otherwise, look for fairly quiet conditions through the period.

A surface ridge axis was located over our Minnesota zones this afternoon and will progress eastward tonight. Winds will back southwesterly in the wake of the ridge. Quiet conditions are expected tonight. Warm air advection over the Northland Saturday will push temperatures above normal and into the upper 30s north to the middle 40s south. A shortwave trough will dig across the Northern Plains and Canadian Prairies into the Upper Midwest Saturday night and Sunday. Near the surface a weak area of low pressure and cold front will propagate eastward through the region. Height falls and cold air advection associated with the system will bring a chance of snow to northern Minnesota early Sunday morning through Sunday afternoon. Northwest winds in the wake of the front and cold air aloft will support a period of lake effect snow showers over portions of the northwest Wisconsin snowbelt Sunday afternoon through Monday. Snow amounts over northern Minnesota should be less than an inch, but may be enough to make roads slippery. Look for 1 to 3 inches of snow for northern Iron County with the lake effect snow, with a dusting up to 2 inches for portions of Ashland and Price Counties. Temperatures will trend colder Sunday and Monday in the wake of the cold front. Highs Sunday in the middle 20s to low 30s in Minnesota and low to mid 30s in northwest Wisconsin. Highs on Monday will be in the low to upper 20s.

The shortwave trough will phase with a southern stream system which will lift out of the Gulf of Mexico and move up the Eastern Seaboard Sunday through Monday. The upper-level trough will transition to a cutoff low over the Ohio River Valley Monday night and will result in ridging over the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest. A shortwave trough may rotate southward over the western periphery of the cutoff low on Wednesday, which would result in snow chances for the Northland. At this time, any snow accumulation appears light, likely less than an inch. The blocked flow pattern will continue through the end of the week with meridional upper-level winds over the Northland. Lower-level flow, around 850 mb, will have a chinook component coming down the northern Rockies, which will provide warm air advection on northwest winds, somewhat unusual for early December. Temperatures will generally be near to slightly above normal Tuesday through the end of the week.

AVIATION. (For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Saturday night) Issued at 1053 PM CST Fri Nov 27 2020

VFR conditions are in place over the Northland and are expected to last through the forecast period. Minimal clouds exist aloft and are expected to clear out tomorrow. There is an enhanced band of winds in the low levels impacting DLH/HIB with low level shear to start the TAF period. The threat for low level wind shear will reappear Saturday night as a cold front begins to pivot into the Northland.

MARINE. Issued at 928 PM CST Fri Nov 27 2020

Southwesterly winds continue to stream across the Lake with a small craft advisory in effect till tomorrow morning. Winds will begin to taper off Saturday as a surface low drops out of the Canadian Prairies into northern MN. Sunday a cold front pivots across the Northland with the departing low and will increase the winds across the Lake. Look for northwest winds that may become hazardous to small craft advisory.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
