Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 917 PM PST Thu Dec 5 2019

SYNOPSIS. Weak high pressure will shift east of the area tonight with moisture spinning around an upper level low off the Oregon coast moving into Western Washington later Friday into Saturday. The low will weaken and move east Saturday night. An upper level ridge will build offshore Sunday for a short dry spell into Monday. The next system should arrive on Tuesday.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/. A low pressure system well offshore over the northeastern Pacific is evident on satellite this evening, with an associated warm front lifting through western Washington and into southern B.C. This brought some light showers across western portions of the area (mostly the Olympic Peninsula, but also a few showers extending near Puget Sound and north into the inland waters). Meanwhile, weak isentropic ascent continues to produce a few light showers closer to Snohomish County this evening. Latest surface observations reveal the showers to be quite light, but enough to measure a few hundredths of an inch of rain. As a result, updated the PoP forecast through Friday morning to reflect this trend. Of note, NBM guidance did a particularly good job capturing the areas where rain was observed. The remainder of the forecast remains on track, with the next front arriving at the coast by late Friday afternoon before pushing inland into the evening hours. Cullen

Previous short term discussion . 12Z model runs continue with similar timing of previous runs showing a weak front associated with negative tilt trough offshore spreading light rain into the interior of Western Washington Friday evening. It should be a fairly brief bout of rain then showers linger into Saturday as upper ridging building offshore finally shoves the broad trough along the west coast inland. Most of the area should be drying out by midday Sunday as fairly high amplitude ridging starts to build into the area. Daytime highs through the short term period will be near 50 with overnight lows most areas in the 40s.

LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/. Upper ridging continues to build into the area on Monday. Except for some areas of morning fog, most areas should see some partial sunshine and near normal temperatures. The ridging early next week heralds something of a pattern change in the extended period. The upper ridge will quickly shift east of the area on Tuesday as the first of a series of systems approach the area. The first system looks rather weak. But both deterministic models and ensemble means point to a more consolidated storm track taking aim at the Pacific Northwest in the later half of next week. December as we normally know it may yet return. 27

AVIATION. Mix of conditions around the region this evening as a thinning mid-level cloud deck has resulted in some scattered low clouds around the Sound, but ceilings generally trending to VFR as warm front continues lifting north of the state. However, expect low MVFR to IFR conditions to remain in the lower stratus from the south Sound and points south. Some short-lived improvement expected later Friday morning area-wide, but approaching front will spread increasing clouds and rain into the region by Friday afternoon for the coastal areas and closer to 00z Saturday for the interior.

KSEA . Light surface winds overnight, with flow becoming increasingly northeasterly by early Friday. Mostly VFR ceilings, but cannot rule out short period of MVFR conditions late overnight through daybreak. Increasing mid-level clouds Friday afternoon with low VFR to perhaps MVFR conditions by 00z Saturday. Cullen

MARINE. Offshore flow will continue to strengthen into Friday. Have added a Small Craft Advisory for southeasterly winds for the coastal waters on Friday. Offshore flow will continue into the weekend as a system of low pressure approaches and weakens over the coastal waters, before moving inland over Oregon. Guidance continues to hint at a brief period of Fraser River outflow winds across the Northern Inland Waters on Sunday. Will continue to monitor this trend over the next few days. 14

HYDROLOGY. River flooding not expected in the next 7 days.
