Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 1142 AM EDT Fri Jun 14 2024

New DISCUSSION, MARINE, AVIATION

DISCUSSION
Issued at 1136 AM EDT Fri Jun 14 2024 The band of showers and thunderstorms from last night has exited the forecast area, but the next band has already formed and is currently encroaching on the Gulf waters in our northern marine zones. Its progression is slow, allowing the band to fester and feed off of the moisture available in the atmosphere. CIMSS MIMIC Layer Precipitable Water shows PWAT values between 2 and just over 3 inches in the environment where the band is as well as the 12Z sounding from KEY showing a PWAT value of 2.17 inches. All of this to say that today will bring another round of showers and thunderstorms through the area, and flooding concerns still exist.
No changes are needed to the current forecast package as well as the Flood Advisory in effect for the Florida Keys.

MARINE
Issued at 1136 AM EDT Fri Jun 14 2024 Mainly moderate breezes and another day of unsettled weather featuring thundery squalls and episodes of heavy rainfall will persist today and tonight. Rain and thunder chances will decrease gradually starting tomorrow. Breezes will freshen by Sunday night, with moderate to fresh easterly breezes expected Monday through Tuesday night.

AVIATION
(15Z TAFS)
Issued at 1136 AM EDT Fri Jun 14 2024 VFR conditions will continue to prevail through at least the early afternoon hours. Latest radar shows a band of showers and thunderstorms over the offshore Gulf waters moving slowly to the northeast to east. Indications are that this should make it to the Island Chain ~14/18z this afternoon with a fairly wet afternoon into evening hours. Therefore, VCSH was placed into the TAFs with 18z for EYW and 19z for MTH. Showers and thunderstorms will be capable of producing MVFR or even IFR conditions for VIS with mainly MVFR conditions for CIGs , though, IFR cannot be completely ruled out.
Also, gusty winds can be expected in and around convection. Near surface winds will be mainly south at 5 to 12 knots.
