Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 910 AM PDT Sun Jun 2 2024

SYNOPSIS
A weak trough over the West Coast will keep a deep marine layer in place through Monday with pockets of early morning drizzle in some coastal and valley areas. Low clouds will retreat back to the coast each afternoon. High pressure building over the Southwest will bring warming to the valleys, mountains and deserts Wednesday and Thursday. Cooler next weekend with increasing onshore flow and a deeper marine layer.

DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...

The marine layer depth was 3400 feet this morning, deep enough to fill the Cajon Pass and the western portion of the San Gorgonio Pass. Like yesterday, the marine layer was deep enough for pockets of light rain and drizzle, most widespread in Orange County and northern San Diego County. Here are a few sites that had measurable precipitation in Orange County:

Aliso Canyon Wilderness Park.....0.05" San Joaquin Hills................0.04" Dana Point.......................0.02" Capistrano Beach.................0.01" Huntington Beach.................0.01"

In San Diego County, Camp Pendleton, Fallbrook and Rainbow all picked up 0.01"

Low clouds will gradually dissipate toward the coast today, perhaps clearing from some of the beaches for a couple hours later this afternoon. Scattered high clouds will drift over the mountains and deserts.

Tonight a Catalina Eddy strengthening over the coastal waters will keep the marine layer deep enough for low clouds to spread back into the inland valleys tonight, and for areas of early morning drizzle in the coastal zones Monday.

From Tuesday night through Thursday a 591 dm ridge builds over the eastern Great Basin. This ridge position will bring hotter days to the deserts where highs Wednesday and Thursday will range from 100- 105 in the high deserts and from 105-110 in the lower deserts.
Mountain areas will also be warmer with highs from 80-90. The eastern portion of the Inland Empire will also feel some of this heat with highs from 90-95. Warming in the coastal areas and the western valleys will be tempered by the marine layer and the cooling onshore sea breeze. Coastal highs will range from the upper 60s at the coast to the upper 70s ten miles inland.

On Thursday night and Friday the ridge over the Great Basin is forced east by a deepening closed low over northern Baja.
This closed low, cut off from the jet stream, will slowly meander north-northeast across northern Baja Friday and Saturday. This trough will bring increasing mid and high clouds and perhaps isolated convection to SoCal, but that will be dependent on the ultimate track of the low. The marine layer will also be quite deep next weekend.
