Synopsis for hawaiian coastal waters.. A surface ridge roughly 250 nm north of kauai will erode through tonight. As a weak front reaches kauai late Tuesday or early Wednesday, robust surface high pressure to the northwest will drive increasing northeasterly trade winds. The high will move closer to the state Wednesday and Thursday, bringing fresh to near gale northeasterly trade winds and large rough seas. Winds are expected to ease slightly Friday or Saturday.

SYNOPSIS
Expect moderate to breezy trade winds today with showers favoring windward and mauka areas. Strong, windy northeast trade winds are expected to build across the area Tuesday afternoon accompanied by increasing clouds and showers. This pattern will persist through Thursday night before a more typical trade wind pattern returns Friday through the weekend.
DISCUSSION
High pressure centered far to the northeast is maintaining moderate to breezy trade winds over the state with some scattered showers favoring windward and mountain areas. This pattern will continue into Tuesday morning before a second, stronger high pressure moves into our area from the northwest. Island winds will respond to the new high, increasing Tuesday afternoon with windy conditions expected through Thursday. An old frontal boundary caught between the two high pressures will ride the increasing trade winds and bring enhanced clouds and showers. These showers will start first on Kauai Tuesday afternoon/evening and then to the rest of the state Tuesday night and Wednesday. The wet weather will favor windward and mountain areas with leeward locations seeing partly cloudy skies and passing showers.
Much drier air will fill in across the state from west to east on Thursday with windy conditions prevailing. More typical trade wind weather with moderate to locally breezy trades and showers favoring windward and mauka locations will return from Friday through the weekend.
AVIATION
Moderate to locally breezy trade winds will continue through the next 24 hours. Clouds and showers will continue to favor windward and mauka areas resulting in periods of MVFR. Otherwise, expect VFR to prevail across the state.
AIRMET Sierra for tempo mountain obscuration remains in effect for Oahu and Kauai. Latest satellite imagery shows drier air moving into eastern parts of the state so will probably to drop the AIRMET later this morning.
MARINE
Moderate to locally strong trade winds will ease slightly today as a surface ridge roughly 250 nm north of Kauai is weakened by an approaching front. A Small Craft Advisory (SCA) is in effect for the typically windy waters around the Big Island and Maui, but conditions will be borderline into early Tuesday. As the weak front reaches Kauai late Tuesday or early Wednesday, a robust surface high building to the northwest will drive increasing northeasterly trade winds and large rough seas, initially around Kauai then later down the island chain. As a result, the SCA has been expanded to all waters starting Tuesday, but keep in mind that impacts will initially be more pronounced around Kauai and Oahu. This SCA currently runs through Wednesday morning, but it will almost certainly be extended through Friday as fresh to near gale northeasterly winds are expected. A decrease in winds is due during weekend, but SCA conditions will likely persist over some waters.
Surf on all shores will be rather small today, but a large seas and rough conditions will develop late Tuesday and Wednesday. The current north swell (360 degrees) has dropped to 3 to 4 feet at 12 seconds and will decline through tonight. Long-period forerunners from a northwest swell will arrive early Tuesday, and the swell will peak around 10 ft Tuesday night and Wednesday.
While the resulting surf will easily exceed High Surf Advisory levels on north and west facing shores, the peak of the swell will coincide with fresh to near gale northeasterly winds, leading to rough conditions and the potential for high surf along east facing shores due to large wind waves. On late Thursday into Friday, the swell will be reinforced and shift out of the north- northwest, likely keeping surf elevated above advisory levels.
The northerly swell is expected to decline during the weekend.
Small short-period wind waves and wrapping northerly swell will produce moderate east shore surf through today, followed by a rise to around the advisory level Tuesday and Wednesday as strengthening northeasterly trade winds produce large wind waves.
Above average east shore surf and rough conditions can be expected Thursday and Friday due to fresh to near gale trade winds and additional wrapping northerly swell. Tiny south shore surf will prevail through the weekend, followed by a small pulse from the south-southwest early next week.
