Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 1033 PM EST Sun Dec 8 2019

DISCUSSION. Currently - A large high cell off the New England coast is generating moderate mostly east breezes across the Keys this evening. This easterly flow is doing a good job of keeping the island chain relatively warm and humid with temperatures slowly falling through the mid 70s and dew points near 70. There is still a decent inversion based around 900 mb with ample warm dry air above. As a result, no shower activity has been evident on weather radar.

Short Term Update - The previously mentioned high cell will migrate further out into the Atlantic overnight. As a result, expect winds to remain gentle to moderate and mainly out of the east. This flow will hold temperatures a few degrees above normal with dew points on a very slow upward trend. Guidance suggests the inversion will weaken further overnight and profiles indicate a veering flow will set up through the lower levels as the high retreats further away. It is conceivable that a few showers may develop overnight. Ongoing forecast is on track and no update is planned.

MARINE. A ridge to our north will maintain gentle to moderate mostly easterly breezes on Keys waters overnight. No changes made in the evening marine update.

AVIATION. VFR conditions expected at the island terminals. There is a slight chance for brief sub VFR conditions due to a few showers later in the overnight. Surface winds will be light out of the east.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.
