Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 440 AM EDT Fri Aug 7 2020

DISCUSSION. CURRENTLY. Skies are mostly clear to partly cloudy with east winds of 5 to 10 mph which are resulting in temperature in the lower to mid 80s along the Florida Keys. Meanwhile, local radars are detecting scattered showers and an occasional lightning storm from just north of the Lower Keys, to the outer waters of Mainland Monroe. On our marine district, winds are east ranging from 5 knots at Alligator Reef Light to 14 knots at Sand Key Light.

SHORT TERM. (Today through Sunday night) Little change in the overall large scale pattern with a western Atlantic ridge axis below 700 mb extending across the Sunshine State, with the axis expanding and retreating through the period. Meanwhile, mesoscale forcing in the form of wet cloud line genesis, especially along the Lower Keys will provide the best chance this afternoon. Beyond that, minor changes in a moist airmass will allow wet cloud line genesis and cells/ouflow boundaries emanating from the large land masses surrounding the island chain. For the balance of this weekend, the best chance for additional showers and thunderstorms will be late Saturday through early Sunday. This is in response to a subtle increase in low level confluence, as well as a mid and upper level vorticity lobe tracking westward and across our region Saturday night. Hence, climo 30 percent pops will be carried until 40 to 50 percent pops are inserted Saturday night, before returning to climo or below average rain chances on Sunday and Sunday night.

LONG TERM. (Monday through Thursday) The persistent low level ridge axis will hold for the most part across the Florida Peninsula. With our region lying on the southern extent of the high pressure cell, pockets of higher moisture followed by drier air will traverse through our area. With forecast timing uncertainty, will retain climo 30 percent rain chances through the period.

MARINE. Light to gentle winds will prevail for today, before gentle to occasional moderate breezes are expected this weekend. Otherwise, a backing low level flow along with plenty of moisture, a moderate risk of waterspouts will be inserted for today.

AVIATION. VFR conditions will prevail at both EYW and MTH island terminals through 00z this evening. With relatively weak easterly flow at 5 to 8 knots established, cumulus cloud line development is possible by early afternoon. Any developing shower may result in a brief period of MVFR conditions to either terminal. VCSH and/or TEMPOs may need to be added to later TAF amendments to account for this.

CLIMATE. In 1920, the daily record low temperature of 70 degrees was recorded in Key West. Temperature records date back to 1872.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerous of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
