Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 347 PM EST Mon Mar 1 2021

DISCUSSION. Looking at the regional synoptic weather conditions, a cold front is bringing cloudiness and storms from Texas to the entire eastern United States. The Sunshine State is generally mostly sunny, although cloudy conditions have crept into the western panhandle. A broad subtropical ridge located south of Bermuda continues to nose in across our area, allowing for generally benevolent weather conditions. Temperatures this afternoon are in the low 80s across the island communities with dew points in the low 70s. Winds have decreased as expected across the archipelago and surrounding coastal waters.

The cold front north of Florida is expected to slowly creep southward through the middle of the week, causing the ridge to flatten out across South Florida and the Florida Keys. This pattern will allow for gentle to moderate breezes across our coastal waters. Rain chances through Wednesday will remain at or below 10 percent. On Wednesday, a low pressure system will lift out of the northern Gulf of Mexico and drag a cold front across the island chain on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. This will allow for slight rain chances on Wednesday night, ahead of the frontal boundary. Winds will also freshen across our marine sector.

Late this week, a low pressure system will move southeastward across the southern Plains and into the northern Gulf of Mexico. Model guidance has come into better agreement about the development and future track, taking the low pressure across north-central Florida next weekend and into the western Atlantic. A strong cold front is expected to move across the island chain late Saturday or early Sunday. The cold front will bring a decrease in the temperatures with values about 5 degrees below normal for Sunday and Monday. Winds will also freshen behind the frontal boundary. Rain chances have been retained at 30% for Saturday, in agreement with the latest model guidance. At this time, most of the upper to mid level support for shower development is expected to stay north of the Florida Keys. It is also interesting to mention that there is going to be only a short time before the two cold front, which is likely limit the return flow of moisture to our area ahead of the second boundary. More details will be provided in subsequent forecast cycles.

MARINE. No watches, warnings, or advisories are currently in effect for the coastal waters of the Florida Keys. From synopsis, the Florida Keys will remain in the western periphery of the subtropical ridge, allowing for gentle to moderate breezes to prevail through Thursday night. Breezes will clock around to the northwest on Wednesday night and continue through Thursday night with minor peaks and lulls. Winds continue to clock around to the northeast by Friday. The next front slides through Saturday with freshening breezes.

AVIATION. VFR condition will continue through the evening and overnight across the island terminals. Winds will back towards the east overnight, then veer back to the southeast during the day on Tuesday and slightly increase. No rain is expected through the period.

CLIMATE. On this day in 1984, a daily record low temperature of 51F was recorded in Key West and 49F was recorded in Marathon.
