DISCUSSION
Issued at 1045 AM EDT Tue Apr 29 2025 A fair weather morning is underway across the Florida Keys, but that may be interrupted later this afternoon. Similar to the last few days, rows of fair weather cumulus stream through our CWA
This time, however, they are packed a bit further north than the Straits as old boundaries from The Bahamas advect over the island chain. Despite the extra cloud cover over land, KBYX radar is free of any precipitable echoes in our area at this time. Offshore observation stations along the Reef report moderate easterly breezes as temperatures on land report back near 80 with moist dewpoints near 70.
Today's forecast is similar to yesterday in that breezes will lull somewhat as daytime heating promotes a thermal low on mainland Florida to weaken the influence of high pressure along the Eastern Seaboard. What differs is the potential for showers and thunderstorms over South Florida. This morning's KKEY 12z sounding notes an inversion around 860 mb between moist air near the surface and dry air aloft. While similar to yesterday's sounding at the same time, CIMSS MIMIC PW notes a band of higher moisture crossing through the peninsula towards South Florida and the Keys. As this higher moisture arrives and heating peaks, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop and push west off of mainland Florida. The big question is whether or not they will make it far enough south to affect the island chain. Opted to hold slight chance PoPs for now as the low level steering flow seems to keep most of the activity to our north. This convection will likely bubble into tonight as easterly breezes become fresh with Small Craft Advisories possibly required for portions of or all of our coastal waters.
MARINE
Issued at 1045 AM EDT Tue Apr 29 2025 No watches, warnings, or advisories are in effect for the coastal waters of the Florida Keys, however Small Craft Should Exercise Caution for increasing winds in all areas except the deep Gulf waters. From synopsis, moderate to breezes today will freshen by tonight as high pressure continues to build in to the region. The high will remain fairly stagnant in place through the middle of the week, so breezes will oscillate between moderate to fresh on a weak diurnal trend with stronger breezes in the evening hours.
Occasional pushes of moisture throughout the week will allow for some isolated shower activity, particularly later this afternoon and evening.
AVIATION
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 1045 AM EDT Tue Apr 29 2025 VFR conditions will prevail at both island terminals through the TAF period. However, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop over the South Florida Mainland this afternoon, which may propagate west-southwestward towards portions of the Keys this evening. Confidence in this activity reaching the terminals is too low to include in the TAFs at this time, although radar trends will be monitored. Near surface winds will remain easterly at 10 to 13 knots, with gusts near 20 knots becoming more frequent overnight.
CLIMATE
On this day in 1941, the daily record rainfall of 6.04" was recorded in Key West. Key West precipitation records date back to 1871.
