Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 1020 PM EST Wed Dec 1 2021

DISCUSSION. Water vapor imagery highlights a potent mid to upper level short wave plowing southeast through the Carolinas and Georgia. The Carolina Clipper and the lower heights trailing to its southwest have eroded the western flank of the Bermuda High. Despite the chaotic surface gradient across Florida and the eastern Gulf of Mexico, surface winds have maintained a northeast to east direction.

A large area of cloudiness continues across and north of the Yucatan Channel, where a plume of tropical moisture remains capped at around 800 mb. East of Cozumel, thunderstorms have found a narrow pocket to sneak past the inhibition, and have done so for the last several hours. Closer to home, the KBYX radar is free of meteorological echoes. Not much change in the 00Z KKEY RAOB, although the trend in rising heights has ended. The forecast calls for nil rain chances overnight with lows in the upper 60s. The favored locations for radiationally cooling may fall into the mid 60s as winds turn to the northeast and diminish. In fact, Big Pine recently fell to 65 degrees. The forecast is on track and needs no adjustments.

MARINE. The amplitude of the daily tides will continue to increase over the next several days. The difference between the high and low tide will reach nearly 3 feet for portions of the Lower Keys, in conjunction with peak water levels similar to the King Tides earlier this month. Moored vessels should allow for more slack in their spring lines, and boaters should plan for less clearance under fixed bridges.

A weak ridge of high pressure will straddle Florida over the next several days. Gentle north to northeast breezes are expected tonight through Friday night, with northeast to east breezes freshening somewhat Saturday through Sunday as the high consolidates over the western North Atlantic. The next cold front may approach the coastal waters of the Florida Keys Monday evening or Monday night.

AVIATION. VFR and light northeast breezes will prevail at the EYW and MTH terminals overnight.
