Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 1109 AM EST Fri Dec 6 2019

DISCUSSION. Currently - Water vapor imagery this morning shows a broad upper level ridge that extends from the eastern Pacific to the western Caribbean has moved into our area. A weak upper level low is diving southeastward across the Red River Valley. Further upstream a stronger, and larger upper level low is approaching the West Coast and this is the next system we are keeping an eye on for the potential front on Wednesday next week.

At the surface, high pressure is moving off the Carolina coast and out over the western Atlantic. Meanwhile, a weak surface reflection of the aforementioned upper level low over the Red River Valley, is moving southeast towards the Gulf coast. Behind this feature, a strong high pressure cell is developing over the Northern Plains and moving eastward. Taking a look at the 12Z RAOB this morning and there was a considerably dry layer present in the lowest levels. This combined with clear skies led to decent radiational cooling for a lot of locations in the Keys. This mornings low at the Key West airport measured 61 degrees, which was 6 degrees cooler than yesterday morning. Marathon did not drop any lower and in fact dropped to 65 degrees once again, however their dew point fell to 49 degrees. This was one of the lowest readings in the Keys. Since then temperatures have rebounded into the lower 70s for the majority of locations. Winds are light from the NE less than 10 mph.

Short Term Update - With the departing surface high, we are in a col-like regime with winds diminishing from the NE and E and will remain light through the next couple days. The high currently over the Northern Plains will emerge over the north Atlantic Saturday, which will lead to an increase in winds by Saturday night and lasting through the remainder of the weekend. In the meantime, temperatures will gradually warm. At this time, no changes or updates needed to the forecast.

MARINE. Winds are diminishing to light to gentle breezes from the NE and E and will remain light through Saturday. High pressure will emerge over the north Atlantic Saturday, which will lead to a freshening breezes Saturday night and continue through Monday night. There remains uncertainty on if the next front will fully move across the Keys and surrounding waters Wednesday next week.

AVIATION. VFR conditions will persist at both EYW and MTH terminals with light NE winds slightly backing to the N.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
