SHORT TERM
(Today through Tuesday)
Issued at 359 AM EST Mon Dec 11 2023
A breezy northwesterly flow has developed across the peninsula in the wake of a cold front that moved through earlier this morning.
As the mid-level longwave trough shifts eastward into the Atlantic, drier and cooler air will settle into South Florida.
Rain chances will approach zero and temperatures will be cooler with temperatures struggling to reach the 70s in portions of the area today.
Overnight, the cold air advection will lead to some mid to upper 40s across Glades and Hendry Counties, with 50s elsewhere and lower 60s along the east coast. The breezy conditions will lead to wind chill values ranging from the 40s in inland SWFL to around 60 along the Atlantic coast on Tuesday morning.
Tuesday will be another dry and brisk day with the wind becoming more northeasterly. Temperatures will warm a few degrees but most of the area will still top out in the 70s. Late in the day, the retreating frontal boundary will begin to push into the southern Atlantic waters from the Florida Straits but rain chances over the peninsula should remain below mention.
LONG TERM
(Tuesday night through Sunday)
Issued at 359 AM EST Mon Dec 11 2023
Wet, unsettled weather returns during the long term period thanks to the presence of a stationary front along the Florida Straits and the approach of a mid-level impulse on Wednesday. The boundary will help focus moisture across the area for much of the week, with PWATs potentially reaching the 2" mark on Thursday. The approach of the mid-level impulse on Wednesday will help promote convective development starting Wed afternoon thru Thursday evening. Activity may be favored over the local Atlantic waters and the East Coast where coastal convergence may favor deeper convection, but the rest of South Florida could also see isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms during that time-frame.
Chances for rain will remain elevated Fri-Sun thanks to the lingering presence of the front to our south, but chances for thunderstorms look paltry at this time given lack of instability/support. This portion of the forecast will need to be monitored further as some uncertainty remains regarding potential impacts that far out in the period.
Pressure gradients between the boundary and an high pressure expanding across the SE US will remain tight through the long term period, resulting in prolonged periods of fresh breeziness across South Florida.
AVIATION
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 647 AM EST Mon Dec 11 2023
Generally VFR conditions through the TAF period in the wake of the cold front passage. Northerly winds around 10-12kts may be gusty at times, particularly this afternoon. Winds will gradually turn northeasterly overnight into Tuesday morning and remain breezy.
MARINE
Issued at 359 AM EST Mon Dec 11 2023
Winds and seas will increase behind the front, persisting through the end of the week. Hazardous marine conditions will develop across all the local waters. Winds are forecast to increase up to 20 to 25 kts with gusts to gale force by the middle of the week, while seas could build up to 6 to 11 feet across the Atlantic waters.
With this in mind, a Small Craft Advisory will remain in effect for the Gulf Waters. For the local Atlantic waters, a Small Craft Advisory will also go remain in effect and will need to be monitored in case a Gale Watch and/or Warning becomes necessary at some point this week.
BEACHES
Issued at 359 AM EST Mon Dec 11 2023
Gusty northerly winds developing behind the cold front will lead to hazardous beach conditions along the Atlantic Coast for much of the upcoming week with elevated rip current risks and high surf.
Along the Gulf beaches, the rip current risk will be elevated today with gradual improvement later in the week.
