Area Forecast Discussion . UPDATED National Weather Service Brownsville TX 1132 AM CST Fri Jan 24 2020

DISCUSSION. Updated for latest aviation discussion below.

AVIATION. VFR through tonight with negligible aviation concerns. More robust low level moisture return on Saturday, along with instability in the mid level flow in advance of a short wave trough upstream, will contribute to low clouds increasing on Saturday, and by late morning ceilings will likely dip to MVFR along with the appearance of isolated to scattered showers. A rumble of thunder cannot be ruled out Saturday afternoon to evening.

PREV DISCUSSION. /issued 541 AM CST Fri Jan 24 2020/

DISCUSSION . Updated for latest aviation discussion below.

AVIATION . High pressure over Eastern Texas will provide VFR conditions and light northeast to east winds for all three regional airports today.

PREV DISCUSSION . /issued 334 AM CST Fri Jan 24 2020/

SHORT TERM (Now through Saturday): A slightly cooler and drier airmass is now in place, in the wake of yesterday's weak cold front that pushed through the CWFA. Current temperatures are hovering in the mid-upper 50s in most locations, with a few spots in the lower 60s along the coast. Although latest surface observations show visibilities greater than 6SM, there is still a chance of some patchy light fog developing, mainly across the Rio Grande Valley, by sunrise and lifting by mid-late morning. For the rest of day today, 1023mb surface high pressure will settle in across central Texas by this afternoon. This will result in tranquil and beautiful conditions in Deep South Texas, with high temperatures in the lower- mid 70s. Tonight's low temperatures will drop into the low-mid 50s in the Northern Ranchlands and mid-upper 50s across the Rio Grande Valley.

A quick pattern shift will occur beginning late tonight into early Saturday morning as ridging exits eastward and a Baja mid/upper level trough approaches from the west, increasing PWATs between 1.5 to 1.8 inches by Saturday afternoon. Ample lift, warm air advection, and low/mid level moisture will cause showers and possibly an isolated thunderstorm or two to form as early as Saturday morning and continue through the afternoon. A surface trough will likely form along the coast as a weak area of low pressure develops late Saturday afternoon. Rainfall amounts look to be very light through Saturday afternoon, with coastal counties expected to see the highest amounts around a quarter of an inch; areas west of highway 281 will only see a few hundreths of an inch or less. Overcast skies and rain will keep temperatures relatively cool on Saturday, but still abnormally warm for January, with highs in the low-mid 70s.

LONG TERM (Saturday Night through Thursday): The passage of the above-mentioned mid-level trough will create rainy conditions for Saturday night. Monday night through Tuesday, and Thursday, will experience additional potentials for precipitation due to the approach and passage of 500 mb troughs for each time period. Dry weather is anticipated for the remainder of the forecast courtesy of weak mid-level ridging. Meanwhile, at the surface, while near normal overnight low temperatures are expected, high temperatures during the daytime will be at well above normal levels.

MARINE (Now through Saturday): Buoy 42020 reported northeast winds around 16 knots gusting to around 19 knots with seas slightly over 5 feet with a period of 7 seconds at 210 CST/810 UTC. Light to moderate northeast winds and moderate seas will continue this morning. Winds will turn more easterly this afternoon as high pressure shifts eastward across the northern Gulf of Mexico. An upper level disturbance will cause showers and possibly isolated thunderstorms to develop on Saturday morning and continue through the afternoon. Southeast winds return Saturday morning as the surface pressure gradient increases slightly. As a result, winds and seas will increase to Small Craft Exercise Caution levels and perhaps near Small Craft Advisory levels for the offshore coastal waters by Saturday afternoon.

Saturday Night through Thursday: Favorable marine conditions are expected through a majority of the period, with alternating high and low pressure systems producing light to moderate winds and low to moderate seas. The most adverse marine conditions, featuring Small Craft Exercise Caution or even Small Craft Advisory, are anticipated for Saturday night and Sunday due to the passage of a weak cold front.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
