DISCUSSION
Issued at 150 PM EST Thu Dec 7 2023
After a couple of days of below average cooler weather, a warm up will start today and continue into the weekend. This is due to upper level ridging and strong high pressure setting up over the southeast U.S. Pleasant weather with rain-free conditions will continue through late Saturday. Daytime highs will top out in the 70's today and Friday and further warming into the 80's for Saturday. Overnight lows will drop into the 40's and 50's tonight, then warming into the 50's and 60's for Friday and Saturday night.
By early Sunday morning, a significant short wave trough moves eastward through the Mississippi River Valley and into the northern Gulf of Mexico. This trough will lend support to a strong cold front that will approach the eastern gulf waters and Florida peninsula through the day on Sunday bringing scattered showers and storms as it moves through the area. Some of these storms could be strong with damaging winds possible. As the front exits the area south and east of Florida by early Monday morning, high pressure builds in over the southeast U.S. in the wake of this front producing a tight pressure gradient that will produce breezy conditions for the first part of next week. This will also help usher in the next cool down on Monday and Tuesday next week.
AVIATION
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 150 PM EST Thu Dec 7 2023
VFR conditions and winds less than 10 knots expected through the period.
MARINE
Issued at 150 PM EST Thu Dec 7 2023
Broad surface high pressure has set up over the southeast U.S. and will dominate the weather for the next few days. Pleasant rain-free conditions expected with east-northeast through east-southeast winds less than 15 knots continuing through Saturday. The next cold front approaches the eastern gulf waters by Sunday morning with winds increasing and becoming more south-southwest around 15 to 20 knots ahead of the front. Scattered showers and storms will be possible through the day on Sunday as the front moves through the area. Some of these storms could be strong with damaging winds and waterspouts.
Winds shift to the northwest behind this front by Sunday evening and increase to Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level around 20-25 knots and seas up to 8 feet. Winds and seas will shift to the northeast and decrease below SCA level by Monday afternoon, but still elevated around 15-20 knots through the middle of next week.
FIRE WEATHER
Issued at 150 PM EST Thu Dec 7 2023
High pressure over the southeast U.S. will produce pleasant weather with warming temperatures and rain-free conditions through Saturday.
Humidity values will remain well above critical levels. A cold front will then move through the area all day Sunday bringing scattered showers and storms to the area. Cooler and drier air expected for the first part of next week.
