Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 329 AM EDT Wed May 27 2020

SHORT TERM (TDY-FRI). A muggy and warm start to our mid week as southwest winds continue to advect very moist and unstable air into our area. An upper level disturbance combined with the collision of the west and east coast sea breeze will bring showers and thunderstorms across the peninsula later today. PWs over 2 inches and CAPE values over 2000 J/kg will support storms capable of producing frequent lightning and gusty winds, especially during the afternoon hours and interior locations. Conditions will feel very uncomfortable as afternoon highs remain in the upper 80s to low 90s, but the ample moisture will make it feel close to triple digits over some inland areas through the remaining of the work week. A surface high pressure will build through Thursday behind the weak upper level disturbance allowing for overnight conditions to get just right for some patchy fog to possibly develop as skies clear and dewpoints remain above 70 degrees tonight and maybe Thursday night.

An upper level trough and associated front approaching the Northeast will stretch southward and begin to impact northern Florida early on Friday. This will result in additional showers and thunderstorms, especially for areas in the Nature Coast northward. Afternoon temperatures will not really change through the period and will climb into the 90s each day.

LONG TERM (SAT-TUE). The frontal boundary associated with the upper level low will slowly move across the area through the weekend and bringing periods of showers to the area at least through Monday evening. By early Monday, winds shift to the north to northeast behind the frontal passage and then becoming easterly by the afternoon, which result in some afternoon showers as the sea breeze pushes inland.

At this point, models continue to show an upper level ridge of high pressure building, warm temperatures, easterly winds and slightly drier conditions dominating the rest of the forecast period.

AVIATION. VFR/MVFR ceilings will continue with west to southwesterly winds prevailing across all terminals through the period. There is moderate confidence on how close the showers and thunderstorms will get to the terminals, as it depends on where they actually develop. Added VCSH/VCTS to all terminals after 15Z, chances will decrease after 00Z.

MARINE. Surface high pressure will continue to build over the Gulf waters keeping tranquil boating conditions through the remaining of the week. However, there will be periods pf showers and thunderstorms, especially over offshore and near shore waters off the Nature Coast. Winds will be relatively light and from the west to southwest through Thursday, but will shift to the east to southeast.

FIRE WEATHER. Relatively high humidities are expected across fire districts today. West to southwest winds will prevail through Thursday, before shifting to the east to southeast on Friday. Chances of afternoon showers and thunderstorms will continue through the period with most of the rain expected to remain over interior areas. Otherwise, no fire weather concerns expected through the period.
