New AVIATION

UPDATE
Issued at 916 PM CST Thu Jan 23 2025

Based on several models and medium to high probabilities of temperatures at or below 32 degrees across our interior CWA, a Freeze Warning has been issued from 3 AM until 8 AM Friday morning. Have also issued a Special Weather Statement to address brief 32 degree temps around sunrise for areas out side of the Freeze Warning. Confidence is medium to high for freezing temps to last a few hours across the Freeze Warning area, however a persistent cloud deck is leading to less confidence across the Coastal Bend. Models are in good agreement with the cloud deck to exit the area overnight which would allow for better radiational cooling. But if the clouds remain in place, lows overnight may end up being around 5-10 degrees warmer than anticipated.

SHORT TERM
(Tonight through Friday night)
Issued at 148 PM CST Thu Jan 23 2025

Temperatures will be cold once again tonight, with lows near or around freezing across much of South Texas. Cloud cover may hang on a little bit tonight, so temperatures may not dip as low as some of the guidance is suggesting. With lower confidence in the extent of these temperatures, will not issue a Freeze Warning at this time. Winds will be fairly light, though we could still experience some wind chills between 20 and 25 degrees across the northern Coastal Plains and Victoria Crossroads. Once again, lower confidence will keep us from issuing a Cold Weather Advisory at this time.

Our weather will be very similar Friday, with highs in the upper 50s and 60s. It looks like there could be more sunshine tomorrow, which may result in slightly warmer temperatures.

LONG TERM
(Saturday through next Wednesday)
Issued at 148 PM CST Thu Jan 23 2025

Key Message:

- Moderate to high (40-75%) chances of showers and a low chance of thunderstorms Sunday along weak cold front

A weak cold front will slowly move southward into South Texas Sunday, leading to moisture piling up ahead of it and a pre-frontal trough. Low to medium rain chances Saturday night primarily over the Victoria Crossroads will increase to moderate to high (50-70%)
chances during the day Sunday. Lower rain chances will extend southwestward over the Coastal Plains Sunday as well. A brief break in the cap with CAPE nearing 500 J/kg will allow for a low chance of thunderstorms over the Victoria Crossroads. The front will either halt over South Texas or just barely extend southward Sunday night through Monday before retreating northward as a warm front Tuesday; low rain chances (20%) are warranted through this time frame.

Heading into the middle of next week on Wednesday, a closed mid- level low over the desert SW CONUS will cause shortwaves to extend over South Texas. This will lead to additional low to moderate rain chances with PWATs progged to climb over 1.5" (99th percentile).

High temperatures will range from the mid 60s to mid 70s through the long-term with the exception of a few degrees cooler in wake of the front on Monday. Lows will generally range from the 50s to low 60s.

AVIATION
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 1032 PM CST Thu Jan 23 2025

Mid level cloud deck along the Coastal Bend looks to be finally moving eastward per satellite trends. Regardless, VFR conditions will prevail through the TAF period. Winds will be light and vary between north and northeast overnight, and gradually veer to the east and southeast through Friday. Therefore, will keep light and variable winds through the TAF period.

MARINE
Issued at 148 PM CST Thu Jan 23 2025

Northeasterly flow will increase to strong tonight, mainly over the southern and offshore waters. A Small Craft Advisory has been issued for tonight until Friday morning. Winds will diminish and shift to the southeast Friday before increasing to moderate flow Friday night. Moderate to strong onshore flow, especially over the offshore waters, will continue through Saturday night, before weakening through Sunday night. A weak front will come to a half just over or south of the northwest Gulf waters Monday, shifting weak to moderate winds out of the northeast briefly. Onshore flow will return by Tuesday. There is a medium chance of showers Saturday night through Sunday night, becoming low early next week.
