New AVIATION
SHORT TERM
(Today through Tuesday)
Issued at 212 AM CST Mon Dec 4 2023
Key Message:
- Low to medium (20-40%) chance of patchy fog over the Coastal Plains late tonight into early Tuesday morning
A very weak boundary will push through South Texas through the day today, bringing drier air and light northeasterly winds in its wake.
Cloud coverage will increase inland to the coast in association with the right entrance divergent region of an upper level jet and bands of positive vorticity at 500mb. PWAT values will remain well below normal (near 25th percentile) at less than 0.75". These conditions persist through Tuesday, therefore do not contain any rain chances.
Although not included in this forecast package, the NBM does show the potential for patchy fog late tonight into early Tuesday morning with a 20 to 40 percent chance of visibility less than 5 miles.
Highs today and Tuesday in the low to mid 70s with lows tonight from the mid 40s inland to the mid 50s along the coast.
LONG TERM
(Tuesday night through next Sunday)
Issued at 212 AM CST Mon Dec 4 2023
Key Messages:
- Warming temperatures through the work week, then cooler late this weekend.
- Slight chance of rain along the coast and Victoria Crossroads this weekend. Better chances for rain over the waters for the weekend.
There is very little change from the previous forecast. A progressive upper level pattern is still expected through the upcoming week with a series of ridges and troughs tracking across Texas. Limited moisture (PWATs <1") will limit the precipitation potential through the week.
Models continue to differ this weekend with regards to an upper level long wave trough and the resulting cold front. The ECMWF is roughly 12 hours slower than the GFS in the arrival time of the surface front, which is due to arrive sometime Saturday through early Sunday. The NBM seems to be a reasonable estimation of the front's arrival, so will use this timing for the temperatures, winds, and precipitation. Moisture will have increase just slightly ahead of the front (PWATs near 1.3" for Friday night/Saturday) so have kept in a mention of some isolated showers for the Victoria Crossroads and along the coast Saturday/Sunday with the cold front; however, expect most of the precipitation will fall over the waters and to the northeast of the area. Temperatures will fall behind the front, with lows dipping into the upper 40s for Saturday night.
Cooler temperatures will persist into early next week, with temperatures in the low 40s Sunday night.
AVIATION
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1120 AM CST Mon Dec 4 2023
VFR conditions expected to prevail across S TX through the TAF period with high level clouds tracking across the region. There is a low chance of light patchy fog bringing visibilities down to around 5SM by early Tuesday morning for ALI and VCT. Will keep a TEMPO group for these two sites showing a brief period of MVFR VSBYs between 10Z-14Z Tuesday. Surface winds will be generally light and variable across the eastern portions of S TX. Western areas will also have light winds, but a more prominent northeast to east direction through the TAF period.
MARINE
Issued at 212 AM CST Mon Dec 4 2023
Weak westerly winds will shift northerly this morning then northeasterly this afternoon as a weak boundary pushes through and persists through Tuesday. Weak northeast to easterly flow will turn to the southeast late this week and increase to moderate Thursday night. Isolated to scattered showers are possible over the weekend as a cold front moves across the waters. Strong northerly winds will develop behind the cold front Saturday night through Sunday with Small Craft Advisory conditions expected.
