Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 644 AM EST Mon Feb 17 2020

AVIATION. Widespread MVFR ceilings this morning with periods of IFR 006-008 stratus. Some clearing of low clouds is ongoing near and to the north of TPA/PIE but a few patches remains so will maintain TEMPO at these locations and monitor over the next hour and amend if necessary. Overall, visibility at terminals has remained MVFR or better with the exception of PGD where 1-2SM vsby will persist until shortly after sunrise. VFR will return area wide by 16-19Z with light SW winds. Fog/low stratus is once again possible late in the period and this will be pinned down in subsequent TAF's.

Prev Discussion. /issued 301 AM EST Mon Feb 17 2020/

SHORT TERM . A broad trough axis extends through the Ohio River Valley and into the SE CONUS while a weak surface low continues to propagate eastward across the FL peninsula and into the Atlantic. This has allowed for some unsettled weather across portions of N FL along with northern counties of W Central FL to continue into the overnight hours. However, the upper-level trough is getting ahead of the surface feature, effectively cutting off any support for the already weak and disorganized surface convergence. Thus, all convection has subsided anywhere near W Central and SW Florida.

However, southerly flow continues to advect deep tropical moisture across the peninsula. Combined with a light flow, this is a favorable environment for fog to develop across portions of the peninsula. However, guidance has been a mixed bag. The question that remains is will the dewpoint depression become small enough for fog to develop. While it has been trending towards a smaller depression, there is still room for this to improve. What has been much more consistent is the development of low clouds. Therefore, going with patchy fog across the land in the overnight hours, and beginning to improve after sunrise. Sea fog is a similar story, with conditions only marginally conducive. Like land areas, only keeping patchy sea fog in through the morning hours.

After sunrise, temperatures will quickly warm. Any fog that does form should burn off by 15Z. The rest of the day looks benign, but temperatures will climb into the low 80s. This is not expected to be high enough to break any records, but it will feel warm.

LONG TERM . Temperatures will continue trending upward through mid-week with high pressure re-taking control. Highs will once again be flirting with records on Tuesday and Wednesday and rain chances are forecasted to remain low. The potential for fog will exist each morning through mid-week. Another trough axis and attendant cold front will arrive late in the work week. This will bring another opportunity for cooler and breezier conditions heading into the weekend before another warmup begins.

MARINE . There is a potential for some patchy areas of sea fog to develop through the morning hours, but this should quickly dissipate after the sun rises. Otherwise benign boating conditions are expected through mid-week before another cold front approaches late in the work week, bringing a potential for rain, higher winds and seas as the weekend approaches.

FIRE WEATHER . Patchy fog is possible through mid-morning, and each morning for the next couple of days. Light winds today are expected to also lead to low dispersions. No other fire weather concerns exist at this time.

Prev Discussion . /issued 1244 AM EST Mon Feb 17 2020/

AVIATION . Model guidance continues to suggest low CIGS/VSBY are likely over the next few hours. Many terminals have already begun to see some MVFR/IFR conditions temporarily, further solidifying confidence. However, intensity, timing, and duration are not for certain. Have tried to time out the most likely time-frame and the most realistic conditions based on current obs and forecasts. Will be monitoring and amending as necessary through the next few hours. By 15Z, VFR conditions should prevail, and remain through the duration of the forecast period. Light southerly winds will become more westerly through the day as the seabreeze migrates inland.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
