Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 910 AM EDT Sun Sep 27 2020

UPDATE. Upper shortwave moving through the TN River Valley this morning as seen in water vapor imagery with elongated and sheared vort max extending into the NE and C Gulf of Mexico. These features to move eastward today and impact our local weather. Morning KTBW sounding remains moist with PWATS near 2 inches and very weak steering flow. So expect afternoon convection to develop on seabreeze boundaries then become enhanced by upper support for numerous slow moving thunderstorms this afternoon into evening hours. Some storms could produce localized flooding rainfall amounts and WPC has much of the area in a marginal risk of excessive rainfall today. Latest grids and forecasts highlight the high PoPs, along with warm and humid conditions.

AVIATION. Light winds and VFR conditions expected this morning then afternoon SHRA/TSRA developing with brief and localized MVFR/IFR possible through around 00Z-02Z.

Prev Discussion. /issued 443 AM EDT Sun Sep 27 2020/

DISCUSSION . Interesting couple of days ahead as pattern shift ushers in a change in our weather. Currently, ridging aloft stretches westward across the state in tandem with weak surface ridging. A eastward- moving shortwave over the lower Mississippi Valley will help maintain west to southwest flow aloft over our area in conjunction with the ridging aloft as it slides by to the north today, before a vigorous shortwave trough drops south across the central CONUS Monday and Tuesday before pivoting eastward across the eastern CONUS Wednesday and Thursday. This will shunt the ridge axis aloft to the south and east of the peninsula by mid week as a pronounced cold front moves into the region during the first half of the week. Given abundant moisture in place (PW values above 2 inches), areas of heavier rainfall will be possible as the front decelerates while traversing the peninsula as surface boundary orientation becomes parallel to flow aloft. Front looks to gradually sag south of our area before stalling on Thursday with a much drier and cooler air mass advecting into the peninsula in its wake while slowly moderating into next weekend.

Today through Tuesday will feature the greatest rain chances (60 to 80 percent PoPs) with east/southeast flow this afternoon favoring areas slightly inland, before becoming more widespread Monday and Tuesday as flow becomes more southwest, favoring coastal areas during the morning before spreading inland during the afternoon. Most recent WPC Excessive Rainfall Outlook highlights much of the northern/central CWA under Moderate Risk of localized flooding due to heavy rainfall, valid today and Monday. Generally, expected QPF amounts across those days are between one to two inches. Rain chances decrease afterward as substantially drier air mass makes its arrival, with latest GEFS guidance indicating a 10- to 20-degree drop in dewpoints (70s to 50/60s) and PW values dropping from over 2 inches to 0.5- to 1-inch Wednesday into Thursday. Expect highs in the upper 80s to around 90 this afternoon, then in the mid/upper 80s Monday and Tuesday before dipping into the upper 70s to mid 80s Wednesday and beyond. After muggy overnight conditions with lows in the mid 70s the next few nights, expect lows in the low 60s north to low 70s south Tuesday night before dropping mostly into the 60s areawide for the remainder of the week. MARINE . Weak high pressure over the region maintains light winds and slight seas through early part of the week before cold front moves across the waters mid week leading to deteriorating conditions as winds shift to north and northwest and become gusty with building seas. Showers and storms will be possible into mid week with associated localized hazardous winds and seas before drier post frontal air mass filters into region.

FIRE WEATHER . Abundant moisture with plentiful showers and storms expected to preclude RH concerns into mid week before cold front brings northerly flow into peninsula with cooler and drier air mass during latter half of week, while remaining above critical thresholds.
