Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 201 PM EST Fri Dec 13 2019

DISCUSSION. Broad cyclonic flow continues aloft over much of the country with an initial shortwave moving over northern Florida. At the surface, low pressure is developing over the Gulf of Mexico, with a warm front over the peninsula lifting northward. This setup has led to shower and thunderstorm activity over the northeastern Gulf, with additional showers over portions of the peninsula. As we head into tonight, another shortwave will move across the region as the surface low moves northeastward. This will be the main timeframe for possible severe weather, during the overnight hours ahead of the shortwave and as the surface low moves over the area. As the shortwave approaches, diffluence aloft will increase with a 70-plus knot jet nosing into northern Florida and bulk shear values forecast to be in the 40-50 knot range. All of this will lead to a slight risk for severe storms overnight, with the biggest threat being isolated damaging wind gusts, though an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

As we head into Saturday, the cold front will move through the region, bringing an end to rain as we head into the afternoon. Cooler and drier air will also start to filter into the region as surface high pressure builds overhead and then shifts eastward through the end of the weekend. Sunday will be the nicest day, with high temperatures in the 70s and dew points in the 50s.

Conditions moderate for Monday and Tuesday ahead of the next frontal boundary, which is currently forecast to pass through the region Tuesday night. Rain chances will increase Tuesday afternoon/evening ahead of this next boundary, with conditions drying out on Wednesday. This front will bring us a cooler air mass, with high temperatures in the 60s to low 70s through the end of the week.

AVIATION. VFR conditions are generally expected, but shower activity could lead to some MVFR conditions. Winds will turn southwest tonight into Saturday and then northwest into the afternoon.

MARINE. Low pressure will develop over the northeastern Gulf of Mexico and move northeast today, bringing showers and a few thunderstorms. A cold front will then move through the region tonight into Saturday, with winds becoming southwest and then northwest through the day and wind speeds increasing to exercise caution levels for a time overnight. Winds will diminish starting later Saturday as high pressure builds in behind the front. There remains some potential for sea fog to develop, mainly north of Tampa Bay, starting tonight into early Saturday.

FIRE WEATHER. Low pressure over the Gulf of Mexico will move northeast, bringing a chance for showers and thunderstorms today and tonight. A cold front will then move through the area on Saturday, bringing an end to the rain. Overall, no fire weather concerns as relative humidity values are expected to remain above critical levels. Some patchy fog will be possible tonight.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
