Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Melbourne FL 943 PM EST Sat Jan 16 2021

DISCUSSION. Current-Tonight . This afternoon was rather breezy across east central FL, with gradient winds gusting as high as 30 mph at coastal locations. As of 9pm, westerly winds have tapered back, and are anticipated to become light and variable soon after midnight. Skies over the eastern half of the peninsula have cleared, with a broad marine stratocu deck over the Gulf of Mexico pressing eastward over Tampa Bay to Fort Myers and stretching inland towards the Kissimmee River. This deck of lower clouds will be the driving mechanism of low temperatures tonight and just how cold the interior will be.

For now, only made slight changes to the temperature forecast along the southern Treasure Coast. Otherwise, light winds and mostly clear skies will allow temperatures to drop to the low/mid 30s for northern Lake and Volusia counties, upper 30s for interior rural counties, and lower 40s at the coast and urban locations. Have added a mention of patchy frost for rural locations well south of Orlando and north of Lake Okeechobee, with patchy to areas of frost expected for interior Volusia and northern Lake counties, where a Frost Advisory will be effective beginning at 2am. As the center of high pressure over the Gulf shifts closer to the region, winds will become light as previously mentioned, lowering the risk of cold wind chill readings, however the ambient temperature will still drop to the 30s for several hours tonight prior to daybreak.

AVIATION. VFR. West winds 10-12 knots earlier this evening will subside, becoming light and variable soon after 06Z. Mostly clear skies, with a broad area of marine stratocu which may offer brief MVFR cigs to KISM/KMCO overnight, but forecast not going as aggressive to include at this time. Winds return to westerly by morning, increasing to 8- 10 knots with clouds lifting.

MARINE. Tonight . Conditions will continue to improve overnight, with west winds diminishing to around 15 knots nearshore and 15-20 knots offshore. With the expiration of the SCA, small craft should continue to exercise caution overnight. Seas 2-4 ft nearshore and up to 5 ft offshore.

FIRE WEATHER. (previous) Drier air lingering into next week, with min RHs in the 30s and 40s into Monday. Winds will decrease after sunset tonight and are not expected to be as breezy in the coming days. However, mixing heights and transport winds will remain elevated enough to produce generally good dispersion values Sunday and very good values on Monday. Colder temperatures expected tonight, with patchy to areas of frost expected across northern Lake and inland Volusia Counties and rural locations north of Lake Okeechobee into Osceola/Brevard/Indian River counties. No precipitation is expected.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
