Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 745 PM EDT Thu Jul 9 2020

UPDATE. Another very quiet weather day as some drier air along with the west to northwest flow limited the convective coverage. This will begin to change overnight though as deeper moisture and an upper level disturbance drift southeast toward the region with scattered showers and a few thunderstorms expected to develop over the northeast Gulf of Mexico and then move into the Nature Coast and eventually reaching the Interstate 4 corridor by morning. This disturbance will continue to drift southeast across the region Friday bringing more scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms along and ahead of it with coverage diminishing from northwest to southeast during the afternoon. Only exception may be across the northern Nature Coast late in the day where some more convection could pop up as subsidence behind the disturbance erodes. Overall the current forecast looks ok at this time.

AVIATION. VFR conditions will prevail early tonight, then some scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms could bring MVFR/local IFR conditions to TPA, PIE, LAL, and SRQ toward morning. More scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected across the area Friday with highest probabilities around Tampa Bay in the morning hours then shifting south and east during the afternoon.

MARINE. A generally westerly flow will be in place across the coastal waters through the period as high pressure over the Gulf of Mexico shifts west and a trough of low pressure digs into the area through the weekend. Weak ridging then gradually builds north over the waters for early next week. No headlines are expected through the period, but winds and seas could be higher in the vicinity of thunderstorms.

Prev Discussion. /issued 247 PM EDT Thu Jul 9 2020/

DISCUSSION . High pressure is in place over the Gulf of Mexico as an area of low pressure just off of the Carolinas coast lifts NE over the Gulf Stream. That area of low pressure has a 90 percent chance of tropical development over the next 2 days as it continue to lift away from the area and dig a trough of low pressure down over the state at the surface and aloft into the weekend. The troughing will then remain across the area through Sunday with westerly flow expected through the period and increasing rain chances with some upper energy enhancing the coverage of convection through the weekend. High pressure then starts to build north from across south Florida for early next week, with easterly flow returning by the end of the period for Thursday. Scattered to numerous showers and storms will continue to be possible through the week with the upper trough lingering through Tuesday, and then some westerly waves moving through the flow later in the week continuing to enhance rain chances. Temperatures remain a degree or two above normal with highs generally in the lower 90s each day and lows in the mid 70s to lower 80s each morning.

FIRE WEATHER . No concerns. Humidities will remain above critical levels through the period.
