Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 304 AM EST Sat Jan 16 2021

. POOR BOATING AND BEACH CONDITIONS FOR SATURDAY .

DISCUSSION. Cold front continues to move southeast into the southern part of the Peninsula overnight. Behind the surface front, we have improving skies (i.e. no more rain), cooler temps, and a northwest wind shift. Morning lows when you wake up will be in the lower 40s for the northern counties, low 50s along/south of I-4 Corridor and east of I-75, and mid/upper 50s near the coast. It'll feel a little cooler due to the northwest winds, especially near the coast. Winds will quickly increase over land by 10am-11am as NAM forecast soundings show mixing out of the boundary layer and tapping into stronger winds aloft. It'll be rather pleasant through the day with highs in the 60s and partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies .

The main impacts over the next 24-36 hours will be poor marine/beach conditions. Although winds will subside later tonight over the waters, seas will continue to remain elevated through Sunday. High risk of rip currents will also continue through tomorrow with surf breakers along the beach reaching advisory level (5ft or greater). Portions of Lee county will also be dealing with respiratory irritation from Red Tide along its Gulf coast beaches through at least tonight. See latest text products for more information.

Colder air will arrive by tonight into Sunday morning as building high pressure helps to drive in cooler/drier air. Lows will bottom out near the freezing mark across Levy county, low mid 30s across the remainder of the Nature Coast, with 40s elsewhere across West Central and Southwest FL. A Frost Advisory has been hoisted for inland Levy county. Patchy frost is possible across elsewhere from Hernando county northward.

High pressure builds into the area . Meanwhile another shortwave trough will dig south across the Tennessee Valley tomorrow night into Monday. This will reinforce the cool/dry air across the region with PWATs remaining less than 0.5 inches and temps below normal through Tuesday. Expect the coolest weather to come Tuesday morning as lows dip into the 30s north of I-4 and low/mid 40s everywhere else. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on what your preference is), weak ridging will prevail by mid week, and temperatures will steadily climb to well above average with highs in the mid/upper 70s. The addition of low-level moisture will eventually result in lows only getting down to the mid/upper 50s through the weekend. On the plus side, the only precipitation through the entire period will be slight chance of showers on Friday across the Nature Coast. Otherwise, rain free conditions will prevail .

AVIATION. (Valid 06Z) With FROPA to our south, VFR conditions currently prevail from PGD northward. TEMPO MVFR cigs will remain possible through at least 08Z before similar VFR deck of BKN040 stratus prevails. Northwest winds will begin to pick up and become gusty by beginning 13Z-14Z, with gusts 20 knots or greater likely. Winds diminish around sunset. Ceilings may break later in the afternoon, but expect stratocu to return overnight. Some uncertainty in coverage/height precludes any mention of category restrictions at this time, but clouds will likely be in the 025-035 range .

MARINE. Poor marine conditions are expected today due to strong northwest winds and rough seas. Small Craft Advisories exist for all waters, including the Bays. Winds will gradually weaken overnight as the pressure gradient slackens. Seas will lag somewhat with less than ideal conditions persisting through Sunday. High pressure builds into our north by Tuesday with winds shifting out of the east. Winds will be elevated, but will likely not warrant any headlines through late week.

FIRE WEATHER. Gusty northwest winds through the day with drier and cooler air filtering into the area. Afternoon dispersions will be high thanks to good mixing and elevated transport winds . RH values are expected to remain below critical levels and therefore preclude any red flag concerns. No rain is forecast across the area for the next 5 days with cool and dry conditions persisting through mid week.
