Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Lake Charles LA 101 PM CDT Tue May 26 2020

DISCUSSION. 26/18Z TAF Issuance.

AVIATION. VFR conditions at TAF sites early this aftn with mostly mid and high clouds over the area. KLCH radar shows patches of light rain acrs cntl LA and approaching S cntl LA, but otherwise a fairly quiet aftn expected with minimal convection anticipated. Short term models suggest a little more sctd showers or storms late this aftn into the evening. Maintained VCSH mention to cover this potential during the evening, and through the period given the abundant moisture, modest instability and nearby upper level low. VFR conditions are expected to prevail through the period. Guidance hints at the possibility of some brief patchy fog toward daybreak, but think any fog will be too short-lived and sparse to include in TAFs attm. Weak pres gradient acrs the region will keep winds generally vrbl around 6 KT or less.

PREV DISCUSSION. /issued 1100 AM CDT Tue May 26 2020/

DISCUSSION . Interesting forecast for this afternoon. At the moment, local 88Ds are relatively quiet with just an area of mainly very light stratiform rain pushing ewd across the Sabine border parishes while an area of better convection pushes across the Atchafalaya Basin. Much of the high res guidance has come in drier today with not much rainfall showing up at all, but then the NSSL CAMs do show another round of convection popping up mainly over the wrn 1/2 of the area by late afternoon. Area 12z soundings show KLCH is still pretty moist with a PWAT around 1.7 inches and a mean RH around 80 percent . but KSHV came in a good bit drier and KLIX a little wetter. Quick glance at ACARS data upstream around Houston shows a good amount of dry air aloft as well. After digesting all that, decided to lower rain chances for the afternoon (especially early afternoon), but not remove POPs altogether, with best POPs remaining closer to the Atchafalaya Basin.

Elsewhere, inherited grids/zones look fine as is. Update out shortly.

25

PREV DISCUSSION . /issued 655 AM CDT Tue May 26 2020/

AVIATION . A line of showers and thunderstorms now east of LCH will continue to advance east across AEX, Lft and ARA early this morning. Gusty winds may accompany stronger storms. Otherwise, expecting any further convection through the day to be limited and at this time simply carrying VCSH as drier air works into the region. Winds will generally remain northwest at less than 10 knots.

23

PREV DISCUSSION . /issued 408 AM CDT Tue May 26 2020/

DISCUSSION . Showers and thunderstorms are now moving into southeast Texas from the west. This activity will move east across our forecast region this morning. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible again this afternoon thanks to a weak diffuse cold front moving across our area.

An upper level low over the Red River Valley of TX/OK will be the focus for shortwaves rotating around it to give us a daily dose of scattered showers and thunderstorms through the end of the work week. Rain coverage should drop off somewhat this weekend as the upper level low ejects into the Ohio River Valley.

High temperatures this week will be dependent on the timing of the rain. If the rain can hold off til the afternoon in some places, temperatures will likely get to the upper 80s range.
