Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Lake Charles LA 919 PM CST Sat Dec 14 2019

UPDATE. Main issue in the short term is again fog development. A marine fog bank that held together through Saturday over the Vermilion Bay and the coastal waters east of Cameron is expanding west and attempting to move inland as the evening is progressing.

Difference tonight is that the winds right above the surface are stronger than last night with winds at 1k feet according to vad wind profiles at KPOE/KLCH between 20 and 25 knots. Therefore, fog bank could very well lift into a very low stratus deck as it moves inland, which is what the latest guidance is suggesting. Therefore, will keep a marine dense fog advisory and expand it to cover all of the near shore zones, as well as the coastal lakes and bays. Will have the advisory out through 6 am, when winds look to increase enough to disperse the fog. At this time, will not issue a dense fog advisory for any inland areas and keep a close eye on it through the evening.

DISCUSSION.

PREV DISCUSSION. /issued 542 PM CST Sat Dec 14 2019/

DISCUSSION . 00Z TAFS

AVIATION . The evening is shaping up very similar to what was seen yesterday. Marine fog is already beginning to push inland with the setting sun and is likely to begin impacting ARA over the next hour and LFT shortly thereafter. In addition to the northward advancing marine fog, clear skies and generally light winds will likely result in some radiation fog development later this evening as well. Fog will once again dissipate between 14Z and 15Z with VFR conditions expected to prevail thereafter.

A tightening pressure gradient between high pressure over Florida and a developing surface low over northeast Texas will result in strong, gusty southerly winds developing by late morning and continuing through Sunday evening.

Jones

PREV DISCUSSION . /issued 351 PM CST Sat Dec 14 2019/

DISCUSSION . Dense fog continues in the portions of the coastal waters this afternoon and will issue a dense fog advisory for these areas for the next several hours.

Otherwise forecast remains on track as cold front still forecast to move into the region Monday. The risk for severe thunderstorms is still there and will indicate this in the grids. Otherwise cool weather after the front passes.
