New UPDATE
KEY MESSAGES
Issued at 942 PM EDT Fri Jun 26 2026
- Dangerous heat is expected this weekend into early next week, increasing the potential for heat stress and illnesses. Stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned places if possible.
- After a mostly dry weekend, afternoon thunderstorms are forecast to return next work week. Some may produce strong wind gusts and frequent lightning. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors.
UPDATE
Issued at 942 PM EDT Fri Jun 26 2026
No major changes to tonight's forecast were required with quiet weather expected.
SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM
(This Evening through next Thursday)
Issued at 311 PM EDT Fri Jun 26 2026
The H5 shortwave responsible for today's showers and storms exits to the east as a ridge begins building over the Lower Mississippi River Valley this weekend. The 594dm+ H5 ridge then sprawls across the Southeast into the Ohio River Valley with us being on the southeast side of it. Meanwhile, surface high pressure over the northeast Gulf continues to provide onshore flow and abundant humidity. The combination of heat and humidity will lead to heat indices approaching Heat Advisory criteria, or heat indices at or above 108 degrees. A very isolated shower or storm is possible Saturday and Sunday afternoons, but those chances are generally less than 20 percent.
The H5 ridge is forecast to move over the Ohio River Valley early next week. This will allow for more northeasterly to easterly mid- level flow and better rain chances to return to the forecast each afternoon starting on Monday. However, the heat will continue with daytime highs in the mid 90s and heat indices pushing 105 to 110 degrees.
AVIATION
(00Z TAFS)
Issued at 736 PM EDT Fri Jun 26 2026
Mostly quiet wx prevails into early tmrw aftn. The main aviation concerns late tonight are MVFR to perhaps IFR cigs at DHN/ABY for a brief period of time, approaching sunrise. Any restrictions should improve mid to late morning. Thunder attempts to impact TLH/VLD starting as soon as around 18Z, so intro'd PROB30 groups for -TSRA thru the remainder of this TAF. Slightly lesser confidence at ECP prompted VCTS. Light westerly winds continue with an uptick out of the SW at TLH/ECP from the aftn seabreeze.
MARINE
Issued at 311 PM EDT Fri Jun 26 2026
Gentle west to southwest flow is expected through this weekend, becoming more northwesterly and northerly early next week. Seas will be around 1-2 feet through the next several days. Isolated to scattered showers and storms are possible today and again early next week, mainly during the nighttime and morning hours.
FIRE WEATHER
Issued at 311 PM EDT Fri Jun 26 2026
Transport winds will mainly be out of the west to southwest around 10 mph through the weekend with good dispersions each afternoon.
Rain chances drop over the weekend before increasing again Monday.
Otherwise, increasing heat concerns are expected this weekend with heat index values in the 100-110, possibly higher Monday.
HYDROLOGY
Issued at 311 PM EDT Fri Jun 26 2026
While thunderstorms could pose a locally heavy rain threat next week, widespread flood concerns are not expected over the next 7 days. The Choctawhatchee at Bruce has crested just above minor flood stage, and will fall below flood stage Sunday.
