Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Charleston SC 136 AM EST Fri Jan 24 2025

SYNOPSIS
Cold and dry conditions will prevail the rest of this week and into the weekend. A weak storm system may move through our area early next week.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/
Tonight: The recent forecast remains on track with only minor adjustments made to cloud cover based on satellite imagery. High clouds associated with a strong h25 jet will pass across the local area, with greater coverage extending across Southeast South Carolina, but also occurring across portions of Southeast Georgia.
These clouds should shift offshore late tonight, leading to cold temps as high pressure continues to filter into the region from the west. With the expectation that skies will be no worse than partly cloudy along with light northwesterly sfc winds in place, temps should dip into the upper teens and lower 20s with the associated apparent temperatures similar or even a bit colder late. As such, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for the entire region. Sfc temps will also remain below freezing through daybreak, resulting in hazardous road conditions due to refrozen snow/slush that partially melted during the day.

SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY/
Friday: A H5 trough will ripple across the forecast area late Friday afternoon and evening. H85 temperatures should remain between -3 to - 5C before falling during the evening hours. The approaching trough should provide the region with a band of thin mid-clouds. The combination of thin cloud cover and light west winds should allow temperatures to reach the mid 40s by late Friday afternoon. Portions of SE GA may peak in the upper 40s. Based on the increase insolation and temperatures well above freezing, several hours of good melting conditions is expected Friday afternoon.

Friday night: The axis of the H5 trough will push east of the forecast area Friday evening. H85 temperatures are forecast to bottom out between -6 to -8C by 3Z, then warm to around 0C by 12Z Saturday. Clear sky, light to calm winds, some residual snow pack should result in low temperatures between 20 to 25 degrees.

This weekend, the pattern will feature zonal H5 flow with sfc high pressure centered over southern GA. Temperatures will gradually warm through this weekend, but remain well below normal. Low temperatures Sunday morning are forecast to range in the mid to upper 20s. Highs near 50 on Saturday will warm to the mid to upper 50s on Sunday.

LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/
The core of H25 135kt jet will pass over the Mid-Atlantic states on Monday. GFS indicates that a sfc low will develop below the right entrance region across the Deep South early Monday. A broad H5 trough will swing east, resulting in the area of low pressure to reach the forecast area on Monday. The forecast will feature a mention of isolated to scattered showers during the daylight hours.
Given high temperatures in the mid to upper 50s, this activity should remain as rainfall. The rest of the week appears dry and mild. High temperatures by Wednesday may range in the mid to upper 60s.

AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/
VFR conditions are expected at CHS/JZI/SAV terminals through 06Z Saturday.

Extended Aviation Outlook: VFR through Sunday. A weak storm system may bring flight restrictions on Monday.

MARINE
Tonight: The pressure gradient will continue to weaken across local waters as high pressure filters into the region and an offshore trough shifts farther east across the Atlantic. As a result, expect northwest winds ranging between 10-15 kt with occasional gusts up to 20 kt across outer Georgia waters to wane through the remainder of the night. Seas will also slowly subside through the overnight period, averaging between 2-3 ft nearshore and 4-6 ft across outer Georgia waters. A Small Craft Advisory will remain in effect across outer Georgia waters through the night.

Friday through early next week: Broad high pressure will linger over the marine zones through this weekend. A weak low pressure system is expected to track across the region on Monday, then high pressure will return through mid-week. Lingering 6 ft seas are possible into Friday across portions of the outer GA waters, highlighted with a Small Craft Advisory (SCA). Otherwise, it appears that wind and sea conditions will remain below SCA criteria.
