Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Charleston SC 228 AM EDT Fri Apr 18 2025

SYNOPSIS
High pressure will remain the primary feature through the weekend and into early next week. A front could spread across our region by the middle of next week.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/
Tonight: High pressure will remain across the Southeast United States, leading to dry and rather quiet conditions for the rest of the night. Temps remain on track and are expected to dip into the upper 40s inland and upper 50s/lower 60s along coastal areas. Latest guidance suggests some hints of patchy fog attempting to develop across Southeast Georgia away from the coast, as a light/calm wind under clear skies favors radiational cooling and coincides with sfc dewpts around 50 during the coolest part of the night.
Patchy fog has been introduced away from the coast across Southeast Georgia as a result to latest trends, but widespread fog is not expected.

SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY/
The mid-levels will consist of a ridge building over the Southeast U.S. Friday into Saturday, causing heights to rise.
This ridge is expected to prevail into Sunday. At the surface, High pressure will prevail in the Atlantic. The periphery of the High will bring our area dry conditions. Expect some fair weather cumulus Friday and Saturday afternoon, followed by increasing high clouds on Sunday. The combination of low-level thickness values and 850 mb temperatures will yield above normal high temperatures. They should range from the lower to middle 80s on Friday and the middle to upper 80s on Saturday and Sunday. Though, temperatures will be cooler at/near the beaches all three days due to a sea breeze. Low temperatures will range from the middle 50s far inland to the lower to middle 60s at/near the beaches Friday and Saturday night.

LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/
Surface High pressure will prevail through early next week.
It'll bring dry conditions with above normal temperatures. A front should approach on Tuesday, possibly stalling across our area Wednesday and Thursday. This will bring diurnally-driven showers and thunderstorms, enhanced by the afternoon sea breeze.

AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/
VFR conditions will prevail at KCHS/KJZI/KSAV terminals through 06Z Saturday. However, deep mixing and the passage of a sea breeze circulation will favor gusty southeast winds up to 20-25 kt at times Friday afternoon.

Extended Aviation Outlook: VFR.

MARINE
Tonight: Very quiet conditions will continue across the local waters as high pressure strengthens and holds across the western Atlantic.
Winds will be southeasterly at no more than 10-15 kt. Seas will range between 1-2 ft.

Extended Marine: High pressure will prevail in the Atlantic through the weekend and into early next week. This will yield SW surface winds. Expect higher winds near the coast and across Charleston Harbor with the afternoon sea breeze. A front may approach our area on Tuesday, but significant winds are not forecasted with it. Seas should average 2-3 ft within 20 nm and 3-4 ft for the GA waters beyond 20 nm. No marine headlines are expected.
