Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 903 PM PST Sat Dec 9 2023
SYNOPSIS
Fair, dry, and mild weather will be the story though next week, with some day to day variations. High pressure over the Great Basin will continue gusty, Santa Ana winds to the mountains, foothills, and valleys this weekend. The strongest winds will occur today, but the warmest day will be Sunday as winds slowly weaken. Weak onshore flow returns for Monday and Tuesday with slight cooling, followed by more Santa Ana winds and dry conditions for the latter half of the week.
DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...
Update: At 9 PM, a few high clouds continued over Southern California while gusty Santa Ana winds continued at the surface.
Peak gusts generally in the 50-60 mph range have occurred so far today, with a few locations below both the Cajon and San Gorgonio Passes as well as near typical wind-prone areas such as Marshall Peak, Fremont Canyon, and others have seen gusts in the 60-75 mph range. Santa Ana winds look to continue through Sunday and then steadily weaken Sunday evening and overnight.
A notable trend in the 12z ensembles now suggests some increasing precipitation chances during the middle to latter portions of next week. The EPS is on the more aggressive side with nearly all ensemble members having some precipitation in the December 20-22 time frame. The caveat to all of this is the consistent model solution of a cutoff upper level low prior to the longwave trough moving inland. The considerable uncertainty regarding timing precludes any changes to the forecast this evening, but certainly bears watching.
From Previous Discussion:
A few high clouds were drifting south over the region this afternoon, otherwise it was sunny. At midday, temperatures ranged form 5-12F colder over the mountains and lower deserts, to 5-12F warmer, west of the mountains. Gusty Santa Ana winds had just come off peak strength over northern areas, and were widespread 15-25 MPH with locally stronger gusts, in the valleys. Strongest gusts have been around 65 MPH below the San Gorgonio Pass, through the Santa Ana Mtn canyons, and below the Cajon Pass. A wind gust summary is headlined on our webpage. Wind Advisories remain in effect through Sunday.
Strong high pressure of 1040 mb centered over southern Idaho, is forcing strong and gusty Santa Ana winds below the canyons and passes of SoCal today. The high will weaken by Sunday afternoon, so the gusty E-NE winds will continue through Sunday morning, before dropping off considerably. A weak wave, moving off the EastPac will top the longwave ridge along the West Coast on Monday, and will be followed by another, that will dig south from the PacNW on Tuesday.
These will be sufficient to flip our winds back onshore temporarily, and provide some cooling and humidity recovery. Latest indications are that those shortwaves will try and cutoff an upper low over northern AZ on Wednesday. The combination of this low, and the reemerging ridge along the West Coast for the latter half of next week, turn or winds back offshore. Depending on the proximity of that cutoff, the developing N-NE winds could could range from weak, to strong. Once this is resolved, we should have a better handle on the Santa Ana wind potential for later next week.
Until then, our warmest day west of the mountains will be on Sunday, followed by modest cooling Mon/Tue, and a modest recovery in relative humidity. By Wednesday as we turn back offshore, look for slow warming and more wind for the latter half of the week. Even though nights will be chilly where winds drop off, and highs over the mountains and deserts will be on the cool side, the high temperatures west of the mountains every day next week, look to remain above average, due to mostly offshore flow. And aside from some thicker high clouds on Monday, skies will be generally fair.
As we move into the following week though, confidence wanes as the spread in ensemble solutions of the various global models widens.
What is most noticeable, is the spread in onset of precipitation at points over SoCal. This appears to be in response to chances for the EastPac wave to cutoff well off the CA Coast. So at least for now, the trend suggests we may have to wait a bit longer, to get any meaningful chance for precipitation here in SoCal.
AVIATION
100430Z...Mostly clear skies with unrestricted VIS will continue through Sunday evening. Local wind gusts 25-45 knots from the northeast will occur along the coastal mountain slopes, foothills and below passes and canyons through 18Z Sun, with weakening winds Sun afternoon, with local LLWS adjacent to windy areas.
MARINE
No marine weather hazards are expected through Thursday.
FIRE WEATHER
...Red Flag Warning in effect through Sunday afternoon for the Inland Empire...
Gusty northeasterly winds will continue through Sunday Morning.
Strongest winds will be below the Cajon Pass, along the Santa Ana Mountains, and below the San Gorgonio Pass, where a few gusts of around 65 mph are expected. Elsewhere in the Inland Empire and along the coastal slopes of the mountains in wind-prone areas, east to northeast winds will be 20 to 30 mph, with peak gusts 35 to 50 mph.
Relative humidity of around 10-15 percent this afternoon, will become more widespread and fall a bit further to 8-12 percent on Sunday afternoon. Expect poor RH recovery in the wind prone areas and thermal belts tonight, with a slight improvement Sunday night.
This will create areas of elevated to critical fire weather conditions in the valleys. Winds will weaken on Sunday afternoon.
Conditions improve Monday through early Wednesday as weak onshore flow returns.
SKYWARN
Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
