Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 406 AM PDT Fri Jul 1 2022

SYNOPSIS. A cooling trend will continue through the Holiday weekend as a trough of low pressure strengthens along the West Coast. Night and morning low clouds and fog will continue, spreading farther inland each night. The trough will weaken starting Tuesday,as high pressure builds in from the east, resulting in a warm up next week.

DISCUSSION. FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE . SAN DIEGO . WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES .

SHORT TERM (Today through Sunday). A low pressure system will remain just off the West Coast through Saturday, then begin to move inland on Sunday. The gradual cooling trend will continue through the weekend with Sunday high temperatures a few degrees below average at lower elevations to 5 to 10 degrees below average in the mountains.

For early this morning, there is a weak coastal eddy with satellite imagery showing coastal low clouds spreading inland into the western valleys in San Diego County, and spreading northward across Orange County. There is also enhancement of mid level moisture and clouds over the mountains into the adjacent deserts over Riverside and San Diego Counties.

Precipitable water values will then steadily decrease through the weekend with the lowest values on Monday. Any mid clouds and afternoon convective clouds over the mountains should be noticeably less over the weekend. Night and morning coastal low clouds and fog will continue to spread inland into the western valleys, then a little farther into the valleys on Sunday and Monday mornings.

LONG TERM (Monday through Thursday). The cooling trend will continue through Monday. For Tuesday into the following weekend, the trough of low pressure near the West Coast will weaken and high pressure to the east will strengthen and move westward, Slow warming will begin on Tuesday with greater warming for the middle and latter part of next week. Ensemble guidance generally has Friday and Saturday as the warmest days.

High temperatures could transition from a few degrees below average at lower elevations to 5 to 10 degrees below average at higher elevations on Monday, to 5 to locally 10 degrees above average on Friday with warmest high temperatures in the lower deserts around 115, and around 105 in the high desert and Inland Empire. The marine layer will become shallower with night and morning low clouds and fog not extending inland past the coastal areas by the end of next week.

Some mid level moisture from the southeast may return toward the end of next week. The mean precipitable water values from ECMWF ensemble output for Big Bear return to levels similar to today, but with a much wider spread between wetter and drier members. Most ECMWF ensemble members have low CAPE for the end of next week with NBM 24-hour chances for measurable precipitation 5 percent or less.

AVIATION. 010910Z . Coast/Valleys . BKN-OVC clouds with bases 800 to 1200 ft MSL spreading 10-15 miles inland through 14Z. Some vis restrictions of 3-5 miles BR/HZ in the valleys and coastal mesas. Low clouds clearing from KSAN, KSNA and KCRQ 16-18Z.

Mountains/Deserts . Mostly clear with unrestricted vis today. West wind gusts 25-35 kt over the mountains and locally into the deserts after 21Z today.

MARINE. Gusty northwest winds near 20 kt over the outer waters each afternoon through July 4th. Otherwise, no hazardous marine conditions through next Wednesday.

SKYWARN. Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
