Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 843 AM PDT Tue Oct 3 2023

SYNOPSIS
Strong high pressure over the eastern Pacific and weak offshore flow for Wednesday and Thursday will bring dry weather with a warming trend through Friday with high temperatures for the coast and valleys warming to well above average. There will be periods of gusty east winds on Wednesday for the mountains and inland valleys with the stronger gusts to around 45 mph. For the weekend into early next week, high pressure aloft will begin to weaken and onshore flow return and strengthen. Cooling will begin to spread inland night and morning low clouds and fog will return to coastal areas around Sunday and Monday.

DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...

Morning Update
Hope everyone enjoyed the touch of fall-like weather this morning with lows slightly below average. Most areas dipped into the 50s and even some 40s west of the mountains, while higher elevations dropped into the 30s and 40s. Much warmer conditions can be expected today away from the immediate coast with highs in the 80s for inland valleys and near 90 for the Coachella Valley.

High pressure will be taking hold this week, leading to above average temperatures and dry weather. As this system pushes over the western states and a trough over the Rockies slides east, upper level winds will funnel in from the north and east by Wednesday and Thursday. This will bring us our first notable Santa Ana wind event of the season. Models continue to indicate this will be on the weaker end, with winds confined primarily to the mountains and coastal slopes with gusts near 45 MPH at times on Wednesday.

.Previous Forecast Discussion (346 AM PDT)...

.SHORT TERM (Today through Thursday)...
Strong high pressure over the eastern Pacific will move toward the West Coast with weak offshore flow for inland areas for Wednesday and Thursday. The warming trend will continue through Friday with Friday high temperatures around 5 degrees above average for the deserts into the mountains and with the coast around 5 degrees above average to 8 to 12 degrees above average for the valleys and inland coastal areas.

A weak coastal eddy will continue at times with some patchy night and morning low clouds and fog possible, mainly for areas near the coast of southern San Diego County. With the offshore flow, there will be gusty east winds during the day on Wednesday for the mountains and adjacent inland valleys with the stronger gusts to around 45 mph.

.LONG TERM (Friday through Monday)...
High pressure off the West Coast will begin to weaken and onshore flow will return to southern California. There remains greater model spread in just how much cooling occurs for the early and middle part of next week depending on to that extent strong mid latitude westerlies over the western and central Pacific extend to near the West Coast. The deterministic NBM has gradual cooling spreading inland with high temperatures on Monday around average for the coast and valleys to around 5 degrees above average for the deserts. The marine layer should return and slowly deepen with night and morning low clouds and fog returning to coastal areas around Sunday and Monday.

AVIATION
031540Z...Patchy low cloud cover with bases 800-1000 FT MSL will be possible at the coast 08z-16z Wed.

Otherwise, mostly clear with unrestricted vis through tonight.
