SYNOPSIS
High pressure aloft and weak offshore flow will bring warming through Tuesday for the coast and valleys and into Wednesday for the deserts. There will be gusty northeast to east winds along and below the coastal slopes of the mountains with the stronger gusts reaching 30-40 mph. Onshore flow will return on Wednesday and strengthen into Thursday spreading cooling inland and bringing a return of night and morning coastal low clouds. Slow warming with gusty northeast to east winds for the weekend, then warmer with weaker winds for early next week.
DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...
High pressure aloft will maintain weak offshore flow at lower levels and steadily warming temperatures today and Tuesday. A weak midlevel shortwave and disturbance embedded within the larger- scale flow will continue to support the formation of high clouds today, with skies clearing overnight. This will set the stage not only for cool-to-chilly overnight lows, but also lead to the warmest day of the week for areas west of the mountains on Tuesday. Highs Tuesday generally look to top out 10-15 degrees warmer than seasonal averages, good for widespread highs in the middle 70s to lower 80s across most locations west of the mountains. The mountains look to range from the upper 50s to middle 60s depending on elevation, while the High Deserts remain in the upper 60s and the lower deserts in the upper 70s to low 80s.
Weak offshore flow continues today and Tuesday, peaking in strength on Tuesday morning when a few gusts of 30-40 mph will occur generally below the Cajon and San Gorgonio passes in the Inland Empire. By Wednesday, the high pressure aloft responsible for warming temperatures and offshore flow will be weakened and flattened out by a strong shortwave trough moving across the Pacific Northwest. Another warm day similar to, if not slightly warmer than Tuesday, will occur in the Lower Desert and mountain regions of SoCal as the ridge axis shifts eastward, but the coasts and valleys will see a return of onshore flow and slightly cooler temperatures for Wednesday and Thursday. Even with the slight cooling trend Wed/Thu, temperatures look to remain near-to- slightly above seasonal normal through Friday. The increased onshore flow will also likely be accompanied by the return of low clouds and some fog for the coastal and valley regions as early as Tuesday night into Wednesday, but more likely and more widespread low cloud coverage is expected for Wednesday night into Thursday as the marine layer deepens.
For Friday onward, offshore flow looks to return as another area of high pressure aloft builds in from the Eastern Pacific. This favors another multi-day round of Santa Anas as well as another warming trend that pushes daily highs roughly 5-10 degrees warmer than normal. EPS and CW3E guidance currently support a more moderate Santa Ana event on Sat/Sun across areas susceptible to easterly winds, so namely across more of the Riverside and San Diego County mountains and foothills as opposed to the San Bernardino County mountains. There is still quite a bit of uncertainty regarding how strong this weekend’s Santa Anas will be as ensemble spread at Campo, per the EPS, is anywhere from peak gusts near 30 mph to as high as 60-70 mph at times.
