SYNOPSIS
Night and morning low clouds will persist over the next week, with only limited clearing in the afternoons at the beaches.
Patchy drizzle will be possible tomorrow morning west of the mountains, and slight chances of light showers develop in the San Bernardino County mountains in the afternoon. Slow warming on Thursday and Friday before subtle cooling sets in this weekend.
DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...
This evening, the afternoon sounding and aircraft reports showed the marine layer nearly 3000 ft deep, with a saturated layer 300-600 ft thick. There is a good chance that the saturated layer becomes thicker overnight. This will likely produce at least patchy drizzle in the lower elevations west of the mountains late tonight into early Wed morning, although measurable precip seems unlikely. The extensive upper low centered a few hundred miles west of San Diego is also resulting in some mid-level easterly flow which is causing some weak convection to move southwesterly across the Mojave desert in San Bernardino County. The convective cells are weakening as they move to the southwest so it seems unlikely that any showers will reach the Apple/Lucerne valleys or the San Bernardino mtns.
From previous discussion...
The low will progress southeastward tonight into Wednesday, moving through far northern Mexico Thursday morning. Enough moisture aloft may wrap around the northern periphery Wednesday afternoon to produce slight chances of rain showers over the San Bernardino County Mountains. Increased onshore flow will spread slight cooling inland across the coast and inland valleys as the marine layer deepens and its influence extends farther inland. A few degrees of warming is likely in the mountains and deserts.
Night and morning coastal low clouds will extend well inland across most of the valleys each day this week with limited or slow afternoon clearing near the beaches.
A strengthening ridge builds over the Pacific Northwest this week, with positive height anomalies and weak ridging moving into Southern California by Thursday. High temps will rise a few degrees on Thursday and Friday, with Friday likely being the warmest day of the week, when highs will range 5-8 degrees above normal across the mountains and deserts, but a few degrees below across the coast and valleys - again due to the marine layer influence.
Another closed low will form to our southwest by this weekend and become absorbed into the mean westerly flow early next week. This will spread slow cooling inland, deepen the marine layer and increase onshore winds. The Climate Prediction Center highlights below normal temperatures across much of the western United States through the end of next week.
AVIATION

Coast/Valleys
Stratus covering the coast and extending roughly 20-30 miles inland as of 03z Wed, with bases 1600-2200 ft MSL and tops to 3000 ft MSL. CIGs look to reach ONT and SBD between 06-09z. Terrain will be locally obscured by clouds, but only local VIS 2-4 miles will occur below the cloud bases. Slow clearing expected Wednesday morning, closer to 17-19z for inland areas. Some coastal locations may not scatter out through Wednesday afternoon, aside from a few very partial and intermittent breaks in spots. Low clouds begin to spread back inland after 00z Thu, preliminary forecast for bases during this time is 2000-2500 FT MSL.
Mountains/Deserts...Mostly clear with unrestricted VIS will prevail through Wed morning. West winds will gust locally 25-35 kt through mountain passes into adjacent desert slopes through 15Z Wed.
MARINE
No hazardous marine conditions are expected through Sunday.
SKYWARN
Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
