SYNOPSIS
High pressure will give way to developing low pressure aloft through Wednesday. This will draw marine air inland over he coastal basin, with areas of low clouds and patchy fog likely to return tonight into Wednesday morning. It will also produce some locally gusty northerly winds on Wednesday. The days will be slightly cooler, but nights shouldn't be quite as cold, due to the added moisture. Warmer days return on Thursday, and continue into the weekend, as a strong ridge reemerges over the Southwest with weak offshore flow. The weather will remain dry, with warmer than average days and cool nights through next weekend.
DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...
The high clouds continue to drift over SoCal at midday, but they are thin enough to allow a decent amount of weak December sun through, and that has allowed the temperatures to really jump off of a low start. At 1 PM PST, most locations west of the mountains had risen above the 70 degree mark. Winds remain light, with peak gusts below 20 MPH.
Developing low pressure over the Great Basin and into Arizona through Wednesday, will trigger eddy development over the coastal waters tonight into Tuesday, and draw marine air back into the coastal basin. Watch for some low cloud and patchy fog development as this happens, along with slight daytime cooling. The marine layer will reach maximum depth on Wednesday morning, and then start to get scoured away, first over northern parts of the CWA, then farther south through Thursday. A gusty northerly flow will start the drying operation below the Cajon Pass on Wednesday, shifting to NE and weakening as the upper low moves east Thursday.
With the upper low out of the way, fair and dry weather prevails, with gradual warming through the coming weekend under a strong ridge aloft. For the weekend, daytime temperatures should be 10F or more above average with a weak offshore flow pattern prevailing.
Latest model guidance continues to back off on any chance for precipitation next week. Individual ensemble members continue to wrestle with outcomes next week regarding any precipitation over SoCal. There are still some wetter clusters, but mainly during the second half of the week. These are beyond our current forecast period, and match the blocking pattern we have seen of late, trapping incoming energy over the EastPac in cutoff systems well off the coast.
AVIATION
112040Z...SCT-BKN clouds at/above 20000 feet MSL with unrestricted VIS through this evening. SCT clouds near 1500-2000 ft near the coast after 02Z.
MARINE
Patchy fog tonight and Tuesday morning. Otherwise, no marine weather hazards are expected through Friday.
FIRE WEATHER
Relative humidity is quite low again this afternoon, with widespread values of 10-15%. Winds have remained light through midday, with a weak sea breeze returning to the coast and into the western valleys.
A modest RH recovery along the coast today, will increase on Tuesday, as a coastal eddy develops and drives cooler, marine air well inland. Northerly, moderate offshore flow develops on Wednesday, and could be gusty along the south slopes and foothill areas of the San Bernardino Mountains, into the Inland Empire, and on to the Santa Ana Mountains. Flow will turn more northeasterly and weaken after Wednesday, but become more widespread, eventually scouring out the marine layer in the coastal basin. This weak Santa Ana pattern will maintain minimum RH values of 15-25% each day, and well above average daytime temperatures, especially west of the mountains. Winds may get locally gusty at times in the usual Santa Ana wind-prone areas at times into the weekend, but the pattern suggests winds will remain weak, to locally moderate through the coming weekend.
SKYWARN
Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
