Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 335 AM PDT Fri Jun 14 2024

SYNOPSIS
Today and Saturday will continue to warm with the heat peaking on Saturday. It will be several degrees cooler for Sunday and Monday with below average high temperatures on Monday by as much as 10 degrees. Warming will begin on Tuesday and continue through much of the week with Friday high temperatures around 10 degrees above average for inland areas, as high as 116 in the lower deserts and 105 in the Inland Empire. Night and morning coastal low clouds will continue to spread into portions of the valleys late each night. There will be stronger and gusty southwest to west winds for the mountains and deserts for this weekend during the late afternoon through late evening each day with isolated gusts to around 50 mph.

DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...

.SHORT TERM (Today through Sunday)...
Inland areas will warm several degrees today and a few more on Saturday with the peak of the heat for most areas on Saturday with high temperatures for the hottest locations in the lower deserts around 115 and in the Inland Empire around 100. Sunday will be 5 to 10 degrees cooler as a low pressure system moving inland through the Pacific Northwest strengthens the onshore flow across southern California.

Night and morning coastal low clouds won't spread as far into the valleys for tonight into Saturday morning as the marine layer becomes a little shallower. Coastal low clouds will spread farther into the valleys for Sunday and Monday mornings as the marine layer deepens.

There will be stronger and gusty southwest to west winds for the mountains and deserts each late afternoon through late evening for the weekend with gusts to 30 to 40 mph with isolated gusts to around 50 mph in the northern Coachella Valley below the San Gorgonio Pass.

.LONG TERM (Monday through Thursday)...
High temperatures on Monday will be another few degrees cooler than Sunday at lower elevations to around 5 degrees cooler for the mountains. High temperatures for the lower deserts will be around 100, a few degrees below average. Warming will begin for the coast to the mountains on Tuesday and continue through Friday for all areas. NBM high temperatures for inland areas on Friday would be around 10 degrees above average with high temperatures for the lower deserts of 112 to 116, 102 to 108 for the Apple and Lucerne Valleys, and in the mid 90s to 105 for the Inland Empire. Next Friday could be the beginning of a longer duration heat wave for inland areas continuing into the following week.

AVIATION

Coast/Valleys
Low clouds based around 1000-1500 ft MSL and tops around 1800 ft MSL continue to fill in over the coastal basin. Bases could briefly go lower overnight but will likely remain at or abv 1000 ft MSL. Low clouds will likely spread up to 20 miles inland by 13Z, obscuring higher terrain with VIS restrictions where clouds and terrain intersect. CIGs and reduced VIS now look fairly likely (60% chance) to impact KONT after 10Z. Meanwhile, there is a 20-30% chance of CIG and VIS impacts at KSBD. Expect inland clearing 15Z-18Z and clearing at the coast 18Z-20Z. Expect later development of low clouds Friday night, generally after 06z Sat. Low confidence on exactly when low clouds would redevelop, but bases would be lower than tonight, generally around or below 1000 FT MSL.

Mountains/Deserts...SKC with unrestricted VIS. Gusty W-NW winds picking up after 20z Fri, with peak surface wind gusts of 25-35 knots expected. MOD UDDFS expected over and east of the mountains.

MARINE
Northwest winds may gust to around 20 knots at times in the far outer waters near San Clemente Island each afternoon and evening Saturday through Monday. No other hazardous marine conditions expected.

SKYWARN
Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.

SGX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES
