SYNOPSIS
A low pressure system from the northwest will move inland through southern California today with colder and moist onshore flow continuing into early Friday bringing cooling, more clouds, chances for showers, and gusty west winds for the mountains and deserts. Then dry and warmer for the weekend into the middle of next week with high pressure aloft near the West Coast and occasional mostly weak offshore flow.

DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...

.SHORT TERM (Today through Friday)...
A low pressure system near the central California coast will move into southern California today, then move across Arizona tonight.
Satellite imagery early this morning shows increasing high clouds across southwestern California with a few patches of low clouds over land areas. The greater coverage of low clouds is mostly just beyond the offshore islands.

The increasing clouds and onshore flow will bring cooling today with high temperatures around 5 degrees cooler than Tuesday to as much as 10 to 15 degrees cooler for the lower coastal slopes of the mountains. HRRR shows some lighter and more widely scattered showers developing in the afternoon ahead of the cold front with increasing coverage during the evening and overnight as instability increases as colder air aloft moves across the relatively warmer coastal waters.

The greater coverage of showers will be to the south and east of Los Angeles County with the greatest coverage across San Diego County from the coastal waters to the mountains. After Thursday morning, the greater shower coverage will be mostly over land areas of San Diego County with the greatest coverage for the valleys into the mountains.

Through early Friday, rainfall for Orange, southwestern San Bernardino, and western Riverside Counties will be mostly one- tenth inch or less at the coast to one-tenth to one-quarter inch in the mountains. For San Diego County, rainfall will generally be around one-quarter inch near the coast to one-quarter to one-half inch in the mountains with locally greater amounts.

Greater amounts are expected in bands of showers. For San Diego County from the coast to the mountains, chances for one-tenth or more of rainfall are generally 75 to 80 percent, around 20 percent for one-half inch or more, and around 5 percent for one inch or more. The snow level will mostly fluctuate between 5500 and 6500 feet with a few inches of snowfall possible above 6000 feet.

High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler on Thursday with the coast and valleys warming a few degrees on Friday.

.LONG TERM (Saturday through Tuesday)...
High pressure aloft will strengthen along the West Coast with a warming trend for the weekend into Tuesday or Wednesday. With the warming, high temperatures on Tuesday will be 5 to 10 degrees above average for the deserts into the mountains and generally 10 to 15 degrees above average for the coast and valleys, into the lower 80s in the warmer locations. There could be some occasional and mostly weak offshore flow at times.
