SYNOPSIS
Strong high pressure over the Great Basin this morning will provide another day of locally gusty Santa Ana winds along the coastal slopes, and below passes and canyons. This dry air will heat rapidly west of the mountains, where daytime highs will be warmest, and well above average. The high will weaken rapidly tonight and Monday, flipping our winds back onshore, and bringing cooling and higher humidity west of the mountains through Wednesday morning. Another surge of offshore winds from the north will start on Wednesday. This next round of dry and gusty Santa Ana winds will become more widespread across Southern California through the end of the week as high pressure rebuilds over the West. After a period of thicker high clouds on Monday, skies should be fair, with warm days and cool nights into next weekend.
DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...
It was clear this morning over all of SoCal, with gusty Santa Ana winds along the coastal foothills and canyons, and below the major passes. Strongest gusts were again below the Cajon and San Gorgonio Passes, where peak gusts were measured between 50-65 MPH. Winds will peak in the next couple of hours, and then slowly diminish. Wind Advisories remain in affect into the afternoon. The dry air will warm rapidly west of the mountains. Our 12Z Miramar sounding still showed significant 24-hr, warming between 2500 and 5500 FT of 4C.
This should ensure we see our warmest day today. No forecast updates are planned.
From previous discussion...
Today will be the warmest day of the week with highs in the mid to upper 70s for much of the coastal areas and valleys.
A coastal eddy is forecast to develop on Monday in response to an upper level trough beginning to push inland across the West Coast.
This will help cool things down west of the mountains while inland areas warm slightly as offshore flow/surface cold air advection comes to an end. Thicker high cloud cover will move overhead ahead of this trough, which should make for some nice sunrises and sunsets. The trough digs south as it progresses inland on Tuesday, bringing additional cooling to the region. The marine layer will rebuild during this period, with areas of low clouds and fog developing along the coast as early as Monday evening, spreading into some of the coastal areas Tuesday morning.
The marine layer deepens into Wednesday with low clouds and patchy fog spreading further inland Tuesday night.
By Wednesday morning the a closed low forms in the upper low and digs into the lower Colorado River Valley. This has trended further west than previous model runs, which would provide more upper level support and stronger Santa Ana winds by late Wednesday morning. There is still considerable spread in the ensembles, however, regarding the strength of the winds. A few members have an even stronger than what we saw yesterday, but the majority show a slightly weaker event. Santa Ana winds will persist into next weekend, bringing a prolonged period of warm and dry weather.
Latest ensembles are in better agreement with the evolution of the upper pattern late this week into early next week, digging a sharp trough off the west coast with a large closed low developing Fri/Sat and then remaining relatively stationary, weakening as it becomes phased with another short wave moving into the Gulf of Alaska and finally progressing east, opening, and weakening late in the weekend into early next week. This sort of pattern never seems to fare well for us, and while numerous ensemble members have some precipitation over So Cal during the early to middle part of next week, you probably shouldn't hold your breath just yet.
AVIATION
101620Z...FEW-SCT clouds at or abv 20,000 feet MSL with unrestricted VIS through this evening. Local wind gusts 25-40 knots from the northeast will continue along the coastal mountain slopes, foothills and below passes and canyons through 21Z, weakening later this afternoon. Expect local LLWS VCNTY through passes and canyons.
MARINE
No marine weather hazards are expected through Thursday.
FIRE WEATHER
...Red Flag Warning in effect through this afternoon for the Inland Empire...
Gusty northeasterly winds will continue through late this morning.
Strongest winds will be below the Cajon Pass, along the Santa Ana Mountains, and below the San Gorgonio Pass, where gusts of 30-45 mph and isolated gusts to 60 mph will continue. Relative humidity will fall to around to 7-12 percent on this afternoon, with poor to moderate recovery tonight. This will create areas of elevated to critical fire weather conditions in the valleys through the early afternoon. Winds will weaken this afternoon into tonight. Conditions improve Monday through early Wednesday as weak onshore flow returns.
Santa Ana winds will develop again Wednesday morning, and continue for the remainder of the week, though there is still considerable uncertainty in the strength of the winds.
SKYWARN
Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
