SYNOPSIS
Building high pressure will lead to warmer temperatures across Southern California through the middle of next week. The nights will still be cold in the valleys, but along the higher terrain, some wind will keep it a bit warmer. Onshore flow returns by late next week as a trough moves inland across the Pacific Northwest.
This will bring stronger westerly winds across the mountains and deserts through next weekend, along with cooler conditions.
DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...
This evening, widespread high clouds are moving from north to south across the region. This could inhibit the radiation cooling somewhat so tonight may be not quite as cool as last night.
Today's high temperatures were a few degrees higher than yesterday but still near or a few degrees below seasonal averages.
From previous discussion...
A strengthening ridge is moving inland off the Pacific and will become the dominant feature over the western U.S. through the first half of next week. Positive height anomalies develop over Southern California tomorrow and increase, likely reaching the peak on Tuesday. Highs will warm 3-5 degrees each day through Tuesday, which will likely be the warmest day of the week.
Periods of locally gusty offshore winds are expected on Monday and Tuesday as a surface high moves into the Great Basin, but these winds will generally be quite weak, with peak gusts of 30-40 mph along wind-prone passes and canyons. Where winds remain gusty overnight, low temperatures will remain elevated, but will fall quickly in wind-sheltered areas.
The ridge will quickly weaken and move eastward by the second half of the week and an upper low will approach the Pacific Northwest.
Winds turn back onshore, temperatures cool and a brief rebuilding of the marine layer will be possible for Thursday and Friday.
Gusty westerly winds will develop over the mountains and deserts during this time. Currently, the upper low is on track to move inland well to our north, and brings very little moisture into Southern California. The forecast consensus is dry, but a minority of ensemble solutions remain wet, especially over and west of the mountains. Once the wave moves east, we could get a period of gusty Santa Ana winds in it's wake, but these will be cool, and it looks dry again into the following week.
AVIATION
030300Z... SCT clouds above 20000 ft MSL with unrestricted VIS will continue through Sun afternoon.
MARINE
No hazardous marine weather is expected through next Thursday.
SKYWARN
Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
SGX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES
