Area Forecast Discussion . UPDATED National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA 511 PM PST Sun Feb 28 2021

Updated aviation section

SYNOPSIS. 28/244 AM.

Gusty northeast winds will occur across most of Ventura and LA counties today. It will be dry with clear skies through Tuesday. Clouds will increase and a chance of rain will develop on Wednesday.

SHORT TERM (TDY-WED). 28/151 PM.

Overall, 12Z models in good synoptic agreement through the period. At upper levels, ridge will move the area tonight/Monday then an upper low will develop offshore on Tuesday before moving inland across the area on Wednesday. Near the surface, expect weakening offshore flow tonight/Monday with weak diurnal flow on Tuesday then increasing southeasterly flow on Wednesday.

Forecast-wise, two main issues for the short term are winds and rain chances. The moderate Santa Ana winds are beginning to diminish across the area early this afternoon. As the afternoon and evening wears on, the winds will continue to diminish. So, will convert all HIGH WIND WARNINGS to WIND ADVISORIES and run them until 600 PM and extended other valley advisories to 600 PM also. For coastal areas, will let advisories expire at 300 PM. For tonight and Monday, models indicate weaker offshore gradients and much less upper level support. So, will anticipate any advisory level winds tonight/Monday morning to remain localized with weak onshore flow returning Monday afternoon. For Monday night and Tuesday, weak diurnal flow is anticipated. For Tuesday night and Wednesday, winds will turn weak northeasterly Tuesday night, but will shift to a southeast to south direction on Wednesday and increase in speed as upper low approaches. Do not anticipate any widespread advisory-level winds on Wednesday.

Second issue with the short term will be rain chances on Wednesday as the upper low takes aim on Southern California. All models have similar tracks with this feature, moving the low center across the Channel Islands and Point Conception area Wednesday afternoon and evening. However, models do differ with the rain chances. The NAM is the most bullish with the rain chances, bringing measurable rain to the area (mainly from Santa Barbara county southward). In some contrast, the GFS and ECMWF keep the bulk of any significant rain chances south of Los Angeles county. So, given the model differences, will keep with same thinking of previous shifts, confining rain chances to Ventura and LA counties. Very preliminary rain totals, if any, are for 0.50 inches or less with highest totals likely over the San Gabriel Mountains. As for snow, expect snow levels to remain around 5500 feet or higher. So, depending on precipitation totals, resort level could see several inches of snowfall. The rain chances (as well as potential totals) will likely vary over the next few model runs. So, stay tuned for updates to the rain chances.

Other than the wind and rain, expect skies to remain mostly clear through Tuesday morning with clouds increasing from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. As for temperatures, all areas will be several degrees warmer on Monday. On Tuesday, expect an additional couple of degrees of warming with only exception likely the Central Coast where sea breeze will knock off a couple of degrees. For Wednesday, all areas will be several degrees cooler with more extensive cloud cover.

LONG TERM (THU-SUN). 28/151 PM.

For the extended, as has been the case the last few days, the models exhibit some noticeable differences. These model discrepancies will once again lead to declining confidence in the extended forecast.

For Thursday/Friday, models are actually in decent agreement. During this time period, an upper level ridge will move over the area. With this pattern, mostly clear skies and somewhat cooler temperatures can be expected on Thursday. For Friday, high level clouds will increase on the backside of the upper level ridge, but temperatures look to warm a few degrees with weaker onshore flow.

For Saturday, ECMWF sweeps a cold front, and some associated precipitation, across the area. Conversely, the GFS has the area dry under a weak upper level ridge. Given the model differences, will go with a middle ground, indicating a slight chance of rain for most areas on Saturday.

For Sunday, both the GFS and ECMWF keep the area dry. So, will indicate partly cloudy skies with temperatures near seasonal normals.

AVIATION. 01/0108Z.

At 0042Z, the marine layer depth was around 500 feet deep at KLAX. The top of the inversion was near 1300 feet with a temperature around 16 degrees Celsius.

VFR conditions are expected through the period. There is a low chance of moderate low-level wind shear and turbulence through 16Z.

KLAX . VFR conditions are expected through the period. Any east winds will likely remain less than 7 knots.

KBUR . VFR conditions are expected through the period. No wind impacts are expected at this time.

MARINE. 28/233 PM.

Across the outer waters . Winds will continue to diminish today and all waters will be below Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level by late afternoon. There is a sixty five percent chance of SCA level winds on Wednesday, otherwise conditions will remain below SCA level through the remainder of the forecast period.

Across the nearshore waters of the Central Coast . Winds and seas are below SCA level and will continue to diminish this afternoon. There is a thirty five percent chance of SCA level winds on Wednesday, otherwise conditions will remain below SCA level through the remainder of the forecast period.

Across the inner waters south of Point Conception . Winds will be elevated and gusty near Point Conception today but will remain below SCA level. Winds from Point Mugu to Santa Monica and out to the Channel Islands including Catalina Island will be offshore to SCA level until late afternoon and the winds will create rough and steep wind waves of 3 to 5 feet. The winds and waves will likely affect the unprotected front side of Catalina Island and produce dangerous conditions on northeast facing harbor entrances including Avalon and Two Harbors. Otherwise and elsewhere, conditions will be below SCA level.

LOX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. CA . Wind Advisory in effect until 6 PM PST this evening for zones 44>46-53-54-88-547. (See LAXNPWLOX). PZ . NONE.

.HAZARD POTENTIAL OUTLOOK (WED-SUN).

There is a possibility of widespread rain Tuesday night and Wednesday.
