Area Forecast Discussion . UPDATED National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA 706 PM PST Sun Dec 15 2019
SYNOPSIS. 15/701 PM.
Moderate northerly winds will continue across portions of the region through tonight then strong and gusty northeast winds will develop across Los Angeles and Ventura Counties Monday and Tuesday. There is a slight chance of showers Wednesday otherwise conditions will be dry through Saturday.
SHORT TERM (SUN-WED). 15/702 PM.
***UPDATE***
A breezy and mostly cooler day today. The offshore north gradient from KBFL peaked at 5.8 mb this afternoon. Northerly wind gusts50 to 55 mph were common in the mtns today with isolated gusts 63 on the windiest exposed ridgetops. Gusts between 35 and 45 mph were common across most of the coasts and vlys of LA county and across srn SBA county as well. A good shot of cold air advection in conjunction with the strong sfc gradient was responsible for the strength and coverage of these winds. This cold air brought 2 to 4 degrees of cooling to the coasts but 5 to 10 degrees of cooling to the vlys and the interior.
The east west gradient has just flipped from onshore to offshore and will grow more more offshore overnight. This will shift the direction of the offshore winds to the NE and a classic Santa Ana will develop after midnight. The north winds will decrease to below advisory levels during this transition.
Will likely let wind advisories for the north winds expire at 9pm and then issue a new batch of advisories for Santa Ana winds starting at 1000 am Monday morning.
The latest run of the NAM still supports the idea of a low end advisory level wind event Monday followed by a moderate Santa Ana on Tuesday.
Will issues updates between 830 pm and 900 pm to expire current wind advisories and issue new ones for Monday.
***From Previous Discussion*** An upper ridge will amplify off the West Coast tonight, building heights about 5DM as it moves into the forecast area on Monday. All models show good offshore gradients with LAX-DAG on monday morning around -5 mb, and increasing during the day. Winds should peak Tuesday morning and the NAM currently has an impressive -9 mb LAX-DAG gradient. There is some upper-level support, but winds should stay in advisory-level range as opposed to a high wind warning.
Skies should be mostly clear Monday and there will be some warming with the rising heights and offshore flow.
The upper level ridge moves eastward allowing a trough to dip down beginning Tuesday afternoon. High clouds will increase, especially across northern and western sections where it will likely become rather cloudy. Not expecting a significant temperature change on Tuesday.
A negatively tilted trough will swing though the forecast area late Tuesday night and early Wednesday. A band of rain will move through SLO and SBA Counties, breaking apart as it moves south of and east of Point Conception on Wednesday. There is still a slight chance of rain in Ventura and Los Angeles Counties on Wednesday.
LONG TERM (THU-SUN). 15/203 PM.
Weak upper level ridging will move into the region on Thursday and linger into Friday, which should be the warmest day of the week in downtown LA. Dry weather is expected Thursday through Saturday, with increasing high clouds on Friday and Saturday with the approach of a large upper-level trough. The ridge will move east of the area Saturday and a large upper-level trough will approach the West Coast. Expecting light rain to start on Saturday and extended range ensembles suggest it could last through the following week and bring 2 or more inches to the area.
