Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 106 PM PST Mon Dec 11 2023
SYNOPSIS
Weather through the end of the week will remain relatively uneventful. Ridging will give way to a weak low pushing into the region during the middle of the week. This system will bring breezy northerly winds to the region, but not much else.
Ridging will return as this system moves out of the area during the second half of the week. Temperatures will continue to run a few degrees warmer than normal for mid-December.
DISCUSSION
through next Monday.
Dry and mild weather will continue for the next few days thanks to the dry westerly flow aloft as an incoming trough erodes at the weekend's ridge. As this trough digs into Nevada, it will become a cut-off low pressure system late Tuesday morning/early Tuesday afternoon. This cut-off low will then continue along it's southeasterly trajectory, moving through our forecast area Tuesday evening through Wednesday. Due to the dry nature of this system, precipitation is not expected to accompany it. The primary impacts from this system will be breezy northerly winds behind the trough axis as it moves through on Wednesday. The strongest of these winds are expected down the Colorado River Valley, specifically around the Laughlin/Bullhead City area. This area has a 80-85% chance of peak wind gusts with a magnitude greater than or equal to 40 mph. Despite the high probability of 40+ mph wind gusts, we have decided to hold off on issuing any wind headlines at this time due to the localized nature of the strongest winds. Additionally, these winds are not expected to be terribly long lived as probabilities for gusts greater than or equal to 40 mph peak at 80-85% around 10am/11am PST/MST and drop below 50% by 4pm/5pm PST/MST that afternoon.
By Thursday morning this cut-off low pressure system will have moved off to our east with ridging moving in behind it. This ridge will allow for the persistence of our warmer than normal temperatures as well as dry and mild weather through early next week.
AVIATION
For Harry Reid...Winds will remain light, less than 10 knots, and will follow typical diurnal directional trends with light and variable winds during the early morning hours. SCT to BKN mid-to- high clouds will move through the region, but will not have any operational impacts.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Winds at KHND, KVGT, and KDAG will remain light, 10 knots or less, and will follow typical diurnal directional trends with periods of light and variable winds as they transition. KBIH will see light and variable winds swing around to the west-northwest during during the early evening hours before becoming more northerly tomorrow morning. North winds will become light and variable later this afternoon at KEED. These light and variable winds will shift to the west during the evening and overnight hours.
Breezy to gusty northerly winds will continue through the evening hours at KIFP.
SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT
Spotters are encouraged to report any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating procedures.
