Update to Aviation Section

KEY MESSAGES

1. Dry weather will continue through Friday with above average high temperatures and below average low temperatures across the San Joaquin Valley.

2. Strong northeast winds will continue across eastern Kern County this evening. There is up to an 80 percent probability for wind gusts of 45 mph or higher along the Mojave Desert Slopes. A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 4 AM Tuesday.

3. Widespread sub-freezing temperatures are forecast across the rural areas of the San Joaquin Valley tonight and Tuesday night. A Freeze Warning is in effect.

DISCUSSION
Visible imagery is indicating that skies have cleared out across the San Joaquin Valley following a morning of dense fog and low clouds which persisted until early this afternoon in a few spots from Fresno northward along the SR 99 corridor. Meanwhile, a dry shortwave trough dropping southward to the east of our area is interacting with an offshore ridge that is shifting inland to produce a strong offshore gradient over eastern Kern County which is resulting in strong northeast wind gusts over some of the canyons and downslope favored areas in the Sierra Nevada and also along the Mojave Desert Slopes where a Wind Advisory remains in effect through 400 AM PST Tuesday. The other impact that this interaction between the shortwave to our east and the strengthening ridge is that it will push drier air into the San Joaquin Valley tonight which will make the probability for dense fog less likely on Tuesday morning than this morning. The PoE for visibility dropping below a quarter mile in Merced and Madera on Tuesday morning is only between 10 and 20 percent. However, the presence of drier air will also result in cooler minimum temperatures with clear skies and light winds expected to prevail over the San Joaquin Valley. The PoE of minimum temperatures below 32 DEG F in rural portions of the San Joaquin Valley is between 40 and 70 percent on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. A Freeze Warning was issued for much of the San Joaquin Valley from midnight PST tonight until 900 AM PST Wednesday. Daytime temperatures will be 2 to 5 DEG F above normal on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A warming trend is expected to take place on Thursday as the ridge shifts further inland into CA. The ridge will then begin to break down on Friday as an upper low drops into the PAC NW from the Gulf of AK. The medium range ensemble means drop this system into the Great Basin over the weekend which will bring chances of precipitation to our area on Saturday and Sunday along with cooler temperatures as slightly below normal temperatures are expected across our are on Sunday and Monday.
