SHORT TERM. (This evening through Tuesday) Issued at 1200 PM CST Mon Mar 1 2021
Wind speeds will continue to decrease throughout the day as the surface ridge expands over our region and the pressure gradient relaxes. A mid to upper trough to our WSW is currently only producing some clouds extending from west TX through SW OK. As this feature progresses eastward tonight, enough lift and saturation may occur to squeeze out some light rain mainly east of I-35 and south of I-40. Elsewhere, skies will generally remain clear and by Tue morning temps should drop back below freezing along and west of I-44. Mid to upper shortwave ridging is expected tomorrow. Clear skies and a return to SSW sfc flow will result in a warm up, with low to mid 60s generally area wide.
LONG TERM. (Tuesday night through next Sunday) Issued at 237 PM CST Mon Mar 1 2021
Wednesday and Thursday will feature above normal temperatures as upper ridging builds into the area. A fast moving cutoff low will approach the region from the west by late in the day Thursday, with showers quickly expected to overspread the area Thursday evening and overnight. While it appears most of the area will see a chance for at least some rainfall Thursday night into Friday, models continue to advertise a pronounced dry slot with this system and the track of the low will be important in determining how much of our area is impacted by this feature. The GFS with its further north track spreads the dry slot over much more of the area than the other models, keeping most of the significant precipitation across far northern OK into KS. These trends will need to be watched to better refine where the heaviest rain (potentially up to 1") may fall. Right now this area still appears to be across northern OK, with lighter amounts to the south. Sufficient instability will likely exist for a few embedded thunderstorms as well, but severe weather is not anticipated.
The upper low will be quickly absorbed by broader troughing to our east by late Friday, with any lingering showers ending in our area Friday afternoon. After this system exits, it appears we will experience a period of mild and dry weather as zonal flow or low amplitude ridging remains in place. This will allow for a warming trend this weekend into early next week.
