Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 204 AM PDT Mon May 13 2024

SYNOPSIS
There will be a chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms over the southern Sierra through Wednesday. The risk for thunderstorms increases across central and southern Nevada Tuesday and Wednesday. Otherwise, temperatures will be some 5 to 7 degrees above normal. Warm temperatures continue into the weekend along with the return of stronger winds.

SHORT TERM
through Wednesday night.

Ridge over Nevada late Sunday afternoon will shift east over Utah/Arizona today. This is in response to a northern stream trough moving through the northern Rockies, along with a weak southern stream cutoff low just off the southern California coast. HRRR probabilities for showers/thunderstorms is greater today along the southern Sierra on Inyo/Mono Counties. That risk then extends northeast across northern Nevada associated with a region of surface convergence ahead of the northern stream trough. Temperatures will warm another 2-3 degrees over yesterday. Only area that will experience gusty winds of 20-30 mph will be across the western Mojave Desert of San Bernardino later this afternoon and tonight.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the weak cutoff low will move inland across far southern California under a building ridge nosing inland over the PacNW/northern Great Basin. SBCAPES in excess of 400 J/kg, residual mid-level moisture north of the cutoff low, and lingering surface convergence boundary will generate scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms across central Nevada and again along the southern Sierra both days. Need to monitor Wednesday as those ingredients could sag further south into the Spring Mountains Temperatures will continue to run about 5-7 degrees above normal.

LONG TERM
Thursday through next Monday.

A growing ridge over the eastern Pacific will continue to grow over the western United States late-week into the weekend. Temperatures will remain 10 to 12 degrees above seasonal averages, with desert valleys increasing to "Moderate" HeatRisk. Las Vegas has a 35% chance of 100F both Friday and Saturday, which would be the first occurrence of the year.

That said, uncertainty remains in the long term as ensemble means indicate a weak closed low will meander eastward into southern California / northern Baja, which would dampen heights somewhat. As a result, the NBM4.1 totes a 10-degree temperature spread between the 25th and the 75th percentile this weekend in Las Vegas.

AVIATION
For Harry Reid...Light winds are expected to continue through the morning. Winds increase to over 10 knots and become gusty out of the southeast in the early afternoon, shifting to the southwest by the evening. Peak gusts should remain less than 20 knots. After sunset, winds remain southwesterly but should decrease to less than 10 knots. FEW mid level clouds develop in the afternoon, mainly over the mountains around the valley.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Gusty southerly to southwesterly winds develop across the Las Vegas Valley and Colorado River Valley this afternoon, decreasing after sunset. Peak gusts at these terminals should be less than 20 knots. At KDAG, winds become gusty out of the west in the evening with peak gusts over 20 knots. Mid and high level clouds pass through the area in the afternoon, mainly along high terrain, and isolated showers may develop in the vicinity of KBIH in the afternoon and evening as well.
