Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 1039 PM PDT Wed Apr 1 2020

SYNOPSIS. Clear and cool weather overnight into Thursday morning. Continued sunny and seasonably mild Thursday afternoon into Friday but one more cold morning Friday. A cold front arrives Saturday with light rain in the morning for the North Bay spreading over the Bay Area by afternoon. A second, stronger storm will drop down on Sunday with more rain, isolated thunderstorms and lowering snow levels to around 3000 feet. Showers linger into Monday and possibly early next week for the Central Coast as the low slowly departs.

DISCUSSION. as of 08:43 PM PDT Wednesday . As the sun set over the Bay Area most of the afternoon/evening cumulus clouds quickly dissipated. Some patchy clouds do lingering as seen by satellite imagery, webcams, and automated sensors (few-sct). Do expect these clouds to thin out even more overnight with mostly clear skies by morning. Near term weather impact concerns continue to be focused on two things: wind and overnight temperatures. Latest pressure gradient from ACV-SFO is almost 7mb, which is pretty decent. The strong gradient has resulted in gusty winds over the waters, coastline and Bay Area Hills. The latest 00z models continue to advertise a slight uptick in wind speed overnight, especially the inland higher terrain. North Bay Mts and East Bay Hills veering more to the northeast by Thursday morning. These winds are forecast to be strongest over the North Bay peaks (Mt St Helena) with some gusts over 50 mph. The valleys will be much weaker, but still hold onto some wind. That right there plays into weather impact number two - chilly overnight temperatures. Current forecast has temperatures dropping overnight into the 40s coast and SF Bay Shoreline. Inland valleys will be colder and in the 30s, possibly lower 30s. The weak valley wind will help to keep temperatures from dropping to Frost Advisory criteria. That being said, if winds do go calm in the valleys predicted dew point values would support colder overnight temperatures. Night shift will have to keep an eye on this, but for now will not update the forecast.

Pleasant afternoon weather is expected on Thursday and Friday, before wet weather returns over the weekend.

PREV DISCUSSION. as of 2:17 PM PDT Wednesday .

Main forecast item of focus then turns to wet weather this weekend. Models have been consistent in bringing rain into the North Bay by Saturday morning then spreading over the Bay Area Saturday afternoon and evening. Rain band will fall apart as it reaches the Central Coast with little or no rainfall south of Salinas. The Saturday system looks light/moderate strength with rain amounts 0.25-0.50 for the Bay Area.

A second stronger system will drop down the coast on Sunday with another round of rain followed by thunderstorms with small hail. Snow levels will lower to around 3000 feet in the North Bay and 3500 feet Bay Area/Central Coast. Daytime highs this weekend will be cold due to precip/cloud cover with highs struggling to reach 60 degrees. Storm totals (including Saturday precip) by late Sunday night/early Monday morning of 0.50-1.00 on average with 1-1.5 inches for the hills.

Showers will linger on Monday as the low slowly wobbles over Southern California. The last two runs of the ECMWF keep the low over SoCal through at least Weds which would keep shower chances going for the Central Coast but the Bay Area should be dry Tue/Weds with drier northeast flow rotating around the low. High pressure to finally build in by mid to late week as the low ejects.

AVIATION. as of 10:38 PM PDT Wednesday . for 06Z TAFs. Mostly VFR conditions with a small patch of clouds hanging around the Southern Monterey Bay. Winds have reduced compared to earlier this afternoon/evening and should continue to ease slightly through the evening. Low confidence in a few lower clouds around isolated terminals overnight, otherwise VFR through Thursday. Winds will remain onshore and once again strengthen Thursday afternoon.

Vicinity of KSFO . VFR. Skies are clear and breezy onshore winds continue to decrease slowly. Slight chance for a few lower clouds overnight, but there is low confidence in development. Cloud cigs are forecast to lift by the late morning as winds become strengthen once again on Thursday. VFR forecast through the day while winds will be breezy and remain onshore in the afternoon.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . A patch of clouds has developed on the southern part of the bay providing MVFR conditions as isolated areas, VFR elsewhere. Wind remain breezy in the Salinas Valley at this hour, but will continue to ease through the evening. A few mid level clouds could develop, but VFR conditions are forecast all day Thursday. Winds will be onshore once again and become breezier in the afternoon, before easing Thursday evening.

MARINE. as of 8:32 PM PDT Wednesday . North-northwesterly winds remain strong with gale force gusts. These strong winds will prevail over the waters through tonight generating fresh and steep wind generated waves. Winds will back off only a slight amount Thursday, before strengthening again Thursday night. The southwesterly swell will continue to be light and persist through the week. Winds will gradually ease through the end of the week and into the weekend.
