Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 303 AM PST Wed Jan 29 2020

SYNOPSIS. A warming and drying trend will occur through late week with temperatures warming to above seasonal averages. Breezy and drastically cooler conditions return on Sunday.

DISCUSSION. as of 03:02 AM PST Wednesday . Patchy to scattered low clouds have developed over the region early this morning with patchy fog also observed in portions of the North Bay valleys. This is a result of lingering low level moisture in place. Despite this, temperatures are a few to as much as 10 degrees cooler in wake of yesterday's frontal passage. Look for temperatures to generally bottom out in the 40s with a few upper 30s possible across the interior valleys by sunrise.

Dry weather conditions are forecast for the remainder of the week as a ridge of high pressure currently off of the West Coast will build inland. This will result in a region-wide warming trend that will begin today and peak by Friday as 850 mb temperatures warm and weak offshore flow develops. Look for widespread daytime temperatures in the lower to middle 60s today with lower 70s likely across the interior by Friday. While the upper level ridge will remain in place through Saturday, the latest thinking is that onshore flow will develop ahead of an approaching trough. This will likely allow for slight cooling on Saturday, especially over the San Francisco Bay Area while locations over the Central Coast may see additional warming.

A region-wide cooling trend is then likely on Sunday and into early next week as the aforementioned trough drops into the Pacific Northwest and then across the Intermountain West. Precipitation associated with this system is likely to remain to the north and east of the region. Afternoon temperatures on Sunday are likely to be about 7 to 15 degrees cooler than on Saturday along with blustery northwest winds. Winds are forecast to gradual diminish by Monday and will likely lead to much colder overnight temperatures into early next week. There is the potential for freezing or near freezing temperatures as early as Monday night into Tuesday morning across the region's colder interior locations.

AVIATION. as of 10:54 PM PST Tuesday . For 06Z TAFs. It's VFR except for patchy MVFR ceilings including earlier observed occasional IFR ceilings on the coastline. Jet stream cirrus clouds continue to move in from the north tonight, if they remain thin then chances improve for additional patchy low clouds and/or valley fog development. Cool air advection turns neutral tonight to warm air advection Wednesday; the WRF model leans toward drier air Wednesday supporting VFR. Only caveat is model forecasts tend to underforecast actual contrasts in air mass temperatures between a newly arrived cooler air mass (like we have at present) against the arrival of warmer air from the East Pacific (forecast Wednesday). A tightening lower level thermal gradient may generate more in the way of patchy low clouds /MVFR ceilings/ Wednesday.

Vicinity of KSFO . Drying has helped mix out the earlier broken lower level cloud ceiling to scattered. Based on high resolution model output low clouds return late tonight, tempo MVFR 10z-14z Wednesday with MVFR prevailing until 20z Wednesday. VFR thereafter.

SFO Bridge Approach . MVFR ceiling at the San Mateo Bridge, KSQL also reporting MVFR. High resolution model output shows MVFR is likely to continue through early Wednesday morning. Ceiling lifts to VFR Wednesday, probably by late morning.

Monterey Bay Terminals . MVFR ceilings, light post frontal mixing is helping to lift earlier observed IFR ceilings. We're last to get lower level cool air advection tonight thus ongoing light mixing should at least help minimize IFR redevelopment, low to moderate confidence. For now tafs indicate general trend toward MVFR, which on last check of metar observations terminals are reporting MVFR.

MARINE. as of 03:02 AM PST Wednesday . Moderate northwest winds will continue through Thursday behind a frontal system that moved through the area last night. Winds will decrease Thursday night through Saturday as high pressure builds over the Great Basin. A dry cold front will arrive from the Gulf of Alaska Saturday night and Sunday bringing potentially near gale force wind gusts.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
