Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 153 PM PDT Sun Apr 18 2021
SYNOPSIS. Interior temperatures will be well above normal today as ridging aloft continues. Slight cooling begins Monday, mainly in coastal areas. More widespread cooling is forecast for Tuesday as temperatures return to seasonal averages. Dry conditions persist through Friday with slight chances of rain next weekend.
DISCUSSION. as of 01:50 PM PDT Sunday . Today is a great example of weather at the coast vs weather across the interior. The shallow marine layer from this morning did erode from the interior spots, but it continues to persist at the coast. Ample insolation has led to a nice warm up across the interior with afternoon temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Max temperatures will likely top out 10-15 degrees above normal for this time year. At the coast is a different story where temperatures are still struggling to reach 60 degrees. In fact, the temperatures sensors on Pt Reyes are barely in the 50s BRRRR. definitely a jacket day at the coast. A few coastal spots may come up a few degrees short of the forecasted high temperature.
For tonight, the amplified ridge overhead will begin to weaken and shift eastward. The shallow marine layer lingering at the coast will move inland, likely farther inland the last night. Patchy fog will also be possible given the shallow nature.
To kick off the work week, morning clouds to start, but afternoon sunshine away from the coast. Temperatures away from the coast will still be above normal, but a little cooler than Sunday's high temps. Coastal locations will still be cool with lingering clouds.
The ridge flattens even more and focus begins to shift northward as an upper low develops off the PacNW Coast. This low will deepen more and beeline it for CA Tuesday into Wednesday. Latest guidance suggest enough moisture and instability will be present to generate a few showers and maybe a thunderstorm across portions of NorCal. The question is, any showers for the Bay Area? Hi-res model develop precip of the Yolla-Bolly Mts of Lake Cty, but they quickly fall apart before reaching the North Bay. In other words, there is an outside chance for N Bay showers, but it is low. Forecast is dry for now. Another upper low sweeps across the region on Wednesday into Thursday, but this system looks mostly dry as well. Regardless of precip the passing upper low will bring widespread cooling to the region.
Temperatures rebound a little by Friday into next weekend thanks to some ridging overhead. A more notable pattern change is still being advertise in the extended as an decent low pressure system drops in from the Gulf of Alaska. Deterministic and ensemble guidance have been honing in on increasing chances for precip next Sunday into the following week. Details will likely change between now and then, but at least there is rain chances in the forecast.
AVIATION. As of 11:30 AM PDT Sunday . For the 18Z TAFs. VFR at most all sites. The marine layer is hugging the coast, but will start to mix out as stronger winds build in over the waters this afternoon. Onshore winds will be lighter for the inland terminals, and mildly breezy for the coastal terminals this afternoon with more moderate winds at KSFO around 00Z. Skies will be SKC-FEW250 this afternoon and evening. The marine layer will return tonight around 08-10Z. KMRY/KSNS will see SCT008 start to advect inland around 03Z, reaching MVFR/IFR conditions around 08Z. Higher confidence in most sites returning to VFR by 17Z Monday.
Vicinity of KSFO . VFR with some low clouds along the coast west of the airport. Onshore winds will increase this afternoon to around 15-20 kt. Models and guidance show the potential for low clouds to move further inland late tonight, brining MVFR conditions from 10-16Z Monday morning. Winds will become more breezy Monday afternoon, with higher chances of G20-25kts.
SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals . VFR conditions prevailing through this evening. Low clouds returning tonight will give MVFR/IFR conditions to KMRY/KSNS from 08-16Z. Lower chance for vis drops <1SM or +FG like was seen this morning. Light winds this morning increasing and turning onshore this afternoon. Onshore winds will become breezy Monday afternoon.
MARINE. as of 10:47 AM PDT Sunday . Expect winds to gradually increase this afternoon and evening. Winds will then pick up further on Monday as a disturbance moves down from the Pacific Northwest into northern California. Near gale force gusts may be possible over the northern waters by Tuesday morning. Elevated winds will persist through mid week. These winds will produce steep wind waves creating hazardous seas conditions, particularly for smaller vessels. Moderate northwest swell through the period along with a lighter longer period southerly swell.
