Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 433 PM PDT Sun Mar 29 2020

SYNOPSIS. Scattered rain showers will continue through sunset. Fog will develop in the valleys overnight, esecially in the North Bay. Another weak system will bring some light rain to the North Bay on Monday while areas to the south remain dry and seasonable. High pressure builds Tuesday through Friday with a return to dry and seasonable weather. Long range trends suggest the next cold front and chance of organized rain will be next weekend.

DISCUSSION. as of 1:55 PM PDT Sunday . Radar still showing plenty of showers aross the region as a moribund frontal boundary moves oshore. GOES satellite shows the onshore flow has brought a stable layer to the coast with clear skies right at the beaches. Shower threat will continue through about sunset with localized downpours where showers pop-up while many areas will remain dry through the evening given the convective nature of the activity.

Fog formation will be of concern overnight, especially for the North Bay valleys where winds go light with abundant boundary layer RH.

Next weak weather system quickly approaches on Monday with best precip chances from Mendocino county northward. However expecting some light showers/sprinkles across the North Bay and have brought the slight chance of precip line down to the Golden Gate. MOS PoPs actually greater than 70% for Santa Rosa to receive measurable precip so its a high PoP-low QPF scenario. The rest of the Bay Area will be dry and still somewhat below normal with highs in the lower 60s.

High pressure builds Tuesday through Friday but the flow remains progressive with northwest flow aloft and the storm track not too far to the north of us. Thus, temperatures wont warm too much, expecting mid 60s to lower 70s most locations.

Models trending more active by next weekend with frontal boundaries poised to impact NorCal. No significant storms expected at this time but it looks like rain chances will return to the forecast later next weekend and into the week of April 6th.

AVIATION. as of 4:30 PM PDT Sunday . Showers decreasing this afternoon as upper level low moves south of the district. However abundant low-level moisture will allow MVFR cigs to reform tonight. In addition models still show a few stray showers mainly over the coastal hills and MRY through 06Z. Patchy fog possible in the North Bay late tonight. The next system will bring rain to the North Bay Monday afternoon.

Vicinity of KSFO . VFR/MVFR with cigs 4000-5000 ft lowering to 3000-4000 ft after 06Z. West to northwest winds 10-15 kt decreasing after 04Z.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . Cigs above 5000 ft lowering to near MVFR range tonight.

MARINE. as of 04:23 PM PDT Sunday . Generally light winds will continue across the coastal waters into early this coming week as high pressure moves into the southern California waters. Northwest winds will increase mid week as an upper ridge builds over the eastern Pacific and an upper low moves inland well north of California. Mixed swell will persist with a moderate northwest swell and a light southwesterly swell.

MTR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Tngt. NONE.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
