SYNOPSIS
Temperatures gradually decrease each day through the weekend. Breezy southwesterly winds will pick up across the area today and tomorrow as a shortwave moves through the Great Basin. Our next weather system will arrive over the weekend, bringing gusty winds and cooler than normal temperatures to the region.
UPDATE
Looking at the early morning visible satellite images, a band of mid and high-level clouds is moving across central portions of the area. A few weak returns are noted on radar, but this is likely virga, and no precipitation is expected to reach the ground except maybe a few drops on the highest peaks across southern Nevada north of the Vegas valley. Temperatures this afternoon will be 1 to 3 degrees cooler than yesterday, but still 3 to 6 degrees above normal. Winds are still expected to pick up this afternoon, with a few gusts of 30 to 40 mph possible across the western Mojave Desert.
Winds elsewhere will generally be 20 to 25 mph this afternoon. The current forecast looks good, and no changes were needed to the grids this morning.

SHORT TERM
through Thursday.
Temperatures today will be a few degrees cooler than yesterday as we see 500 mb heights begin to decrease as a shortwave trough begins to move through the Great Basin. In addition to slightly cooler temperatures, we will also see breezy southerly-to-southwesterly winds pick up across area today and tomorrow with the strongest of these winds occurring in the western Mojave Desert where 30 to 40 mph wind gusts are expected. Mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies are expected across our forecast area as this shortwave drives mid-to- high clouds through southeastern California, southern Nevada, and northwest Arizona. Weather on Thursday will be very similar to today with breezy southwesterly winds, similar temperatures, and mid-to- high clouds filtering through the area.
LONG TERM
Friday through Wednesday.
A fairly deep trough will take shape off the West Coast on Friday and shift inland over the weekend. Overall, ensemble agreement has come into pretty good agreement on the general idea with this system, though there remains some uncertainty into how quickly the system departs early next week. Nonetheless, gusty winds will overspread much of the region Friday and Saturday in advance of the trough, along with sharply cooler temperatures Saturday and Sunday.
Precipitation expectations remain fairly limited, with the best chance for light rain and high elevation snow possible the Sierra and southern Great Basin. However, cold air aloft under the trough axis over the weekend could result in at least some isolated terrain driven showers as far south as Las Vegas, so trends will continue to be monitored for any necessary bumps in precip chances.
By early next week, heights will gradually rise as the weekend trough departs. As mentioned previously, how quickly it departs remains a little uncertain but a general warming trend is still likely to begin Monday and temperatures returning to near normal or slightly above normal by midweek.
AVIATION
For Harry Reid...For the 18Z Forecast Package...Breezy south to southwest winds are expected at all the valley terminals today. There is a high probability (80%+) for wind speeds over 10KT and gusts over 20KT through the afternoon, with the strongest winds expected between 21Z and 02Z when there is a 30%-40% chance for gusts over 25KT. South winds will diminish this evening with gusts ending around 03Z, but there is at least a 50% chance for wind speeds at or above 10KT through 09Z so expected continued elevated winds speeds through the first half of the night. Winds should drop below 8KT between 09Z-12Z Thursday morning at KLAS and VGT with light diurnal through Thursday morning. KHND will remain south around 10KT through Thursday morning. South to southwest wind will increase again Thursday after 18Z and should be slightly lower than today's winds. Occasional clouds around 20kft-25kft are expected at times through the period.

Breezy south to southwest winds are expected across the region today. Gusts of 20- 30KT are expected for most locations this afternoon.
