Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 225 AM PST Fri Dec 8 2023
SYNOPSIS
North winds will increase today through Saturday and temperatures will cool several degrees behind a system passing over the Four Corners Region. Gusts around 40 mph will occur tonight and Saturday along and near the Colorado River Valley. High pressure building over the weekend will give way to another trough next week resulting in north breezes with temperatures near normal.
SHORT TERM
Today through Saturday night.
An energetic trough with substantial moisture could be seen on recent satellite imagery this morning digging over Utah resulting in significant snow in the Wasatch/Unitas and the Rockies today.
Southern Nevada and surrounding areas will end up getting a push of north winds and cooler temperatures on the back side of this system and the latest high res models indicate a high probability of fairly extensive over 40 mph developing along Lake Mohave and the lower Colorado River Valley and nearby areas of southern Clark and eastern San Bernardino counties tonight through early Saturday afternoon. A Wind Advisory is in effect from midnight PST /1 AM MST/ Saturday to 4 PM PST /5 PM MST/ Saturday for these zones. The rest of the region will see north-northeast winds gusting generally 20-30 mph.
Temperatures will decrease several degrees today then bottom out Saturday 4-5 degrees below normal which translates to highs in the mid 50s across most of the Mojave Desert zones.
LONG TERM
Sunday through next Friday.
The ridge building over the western states behind the aforementioned system will begin flattening Sunday and Monday in response to a shortwave moving from the Pacific Northwest across the northern Great Basin. Additional energy in the northwest flow aloft will lead to another trough digging over the Four Corners region Tuesday and possibly becoming a cut-off low Wednesday-Friday. Model ensembles indicate the position of the system and lack of moisture will mainly resulting in north breezes for our region and temperatures only climbing a few degrees from Sunday then holding fairly steady through the week. Not much indication of any significant impacts on the horizon for our region.
AVIATION
For Harry Reid...Southwest winds, generally less than 8kts, will continue through mid-morning before turning to the northeast and increasing to greater than 10kts. There is also a 40% chance of seeing a few gusts to 20kts through late afternoon. Winds are expected to back around to a more north-to-north-northwest direction after sunset, but speeds will likely remain around 10kts or greater through the overnight period. Gusty northeast winds will redevelop Saturday morning. Only a FEW-SCT high clouds AOA 20kft are expected through the TAF period.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...The highest winds today are expected across the Lower Colorado River Valley, where gusts of up to 30kts will be possible.
A slight decrease is expected after sunset, but winds will increase again by daybreak on Saturday. Elsewhere, north to northeast winds of less than 20kts are expected through this afternoon before decreasing this evening. Vegas area sites will see winds increase once again overnight into Saturday morning, while KBIH and KDAG continue to see lighter winds overnight. Only a FEW-SCT high clouds AOA 20kft are expected area-wide through the TAF period.
SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT
Spotters are encouraged to report any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating procedures.
